Cancer and Green Tea - Sorting Through The Evidence

By now most of us have heard that green tea may have tremendous potential in terms of helping us win the war against cancer. There have been many studies that have shown that green tea has been shown to prevent the development of cancer when it is a significant part of your diet. In addition, there have even been studies that have shown that green tea may even have potential for treating cancer.

But, then occasionally you’ll find a study that makes it sound as though green tea may actually have some negative effects on our health. So, it can be easy to get confused as to whether we really should be adding green tea to our diets for health benefits or not.

Here are a few things that are known for sure.

Anti-oxidants are good for us. They combat the free radicals that are created in our bodies as we process food. When our diet is low in anti-oxidants the free radicals damage our cells and our DNA. Over time this leads to aging and disease.

Tea contains EGCG and polyphenols. These are two of the most potent forms of anti-oxidants, making tea, particularly green tea, because of its lack of fermentation, rich in the substance that protect us from aging and disease.

There are no known side effects to drinking green tea. Green tea is lower in caffeine that coffee or black tea, so it’s a good beverage choice for those who must watch their intake of caffeine. And, it’s completely natural. A simple cup of tea will have no additives, preservatives or processed substances.

Asian cultures drink a large amount of green tea and have a significantly lower than incidence of cancer, heart disease and stroke. Of course, there may be other factors in the Asian lifestyle that affect their lower incidence of disease. However, there are some statistics that are startling. For instance, nearly 75% of all Japanese men smoke, yet their risk of and heart disease is significantly lower than that of American men.

It’s true that we still need additional research on humans to gain more conclusive evidence about green tea and its potential in preventing or treating cancer.

Many of the studies that have been conducted have been on mice. Human research takes years of follow up to be conclusive and is more difficult than laboratory research. And, there are many more factors that must be considered during human studies, such as habits and genetics.

One interesting discussion of the studies that have been performed on green tea and their results, both positive and negative, is in the National Library of Medicine. This publication gave an overview of several studies done on green tea and cancer. The breakdown looks like this.

In 5 studies on , three concluded that it might , one concluded that green tea might contribute to cancer.

In 4 studies on rectal cancer, one reported that green tea could , but two showed that it might actually contribute to developing the disease.

In 10 studies on stomach cancer, 6 suggested that green tea might and 3 suggested that it might contribute to cancer. The most comprehensive study on stomach cancer reported that green tea is an effective preventer of cancer.

Nearly all studies on pancreatic and esophageal cancer suggest that green tea has a preventative effect, and most studies have shown positive results, though there has been at least one study that reported and increased risk associated with green tea.

So, as with many other health research concerns, there is still much work that needs to be done. And, there have been a few studies that have shown a possibility that green tea might actually increase your risk of cancer. However, when you take the research as a whole, it seems probable that you’re better off drinking green tea than avoiding it.

As research continues, we’ll learn more definitive information about the level of protection that green tea can provide, and just exactly how it provides this protection. As we learn more, we’ll be better able to determine how much tea you really need to drink and on which cancers it seems to be most effective.

In spite of the few studies that have shown some negative results, overall researchers believe that green tea shows great promise in the area of and treatment. For centuries, Asians have used green tea to prevent and treat all kinds of illnesses, even before there was scientific research to support it.

In the mean time, there seems to be no reason to avoid green tea. It’s refreshing, has no side effects and can be a great way to lower your intake of caffeine. Natural Health Therapies And Cancer - Part One

Cancer. The word itself is alarming. It sounds like a death sentence. In many cases, it is. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way. The topic of cancer is so large that we will take at least three or four articles to even begin to touch on the main points. Like any other illness, the more you know about it, the better you’ll be able to deal with it. For example, how much did you know about your own health issues before they touched your life personally? What would you have done differently in your life if you knew that it would prevent the problem from happening? Would you have been willing to make the changes? I imagine that you would. You have that opportunity with cancer. In a series of articles, we’ll cover not only the natural health therapies for cancer but the lifestyle changes that help as well.

The increase in the rate of cancer is amazing. A hundred years ago, 1 in 33 people had cancer; today, 1 in 3 people either have cancer or will develop it. Statistics show that one American life is lost to cancer every 45 seconds. There is no other topic in medicine that has such urgency. So, exactly what is cancer? Basically, it is nature gone overboard. Healthy cells stop functioning properly for a variety of reasons and then begin to reproduce damaged copies of themselves. The natural process of cells multiplying becomes accelerated because these new mutant cells are not regulated by the body’s normal controls. In addition, the life span of these cells is not controlled any longer, meaning that cancer cells become virtually immortal.

There are types and stages of cancer. Of the 150 different types of cancer, there are 5 major groups:
• Carcinomas – solid tumors from cells in the surface of the mouth, nose, throat, lung airways, skin, GI tract, GU tract, breast, and thyroid. Lung, prostate, stomach, skin, colon, and breast cancers are in this type.
• Sarcomas – solid tumor from bones, fat, and other soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, abdomen, heart, central nervous system, and blood vessels. These are the most rare and most deadly of solid tumors.
• Leukemias – a blood-borne cancer type characterized by an abnormal production of white blood cells.
• Lymphomas – solid masses of abnormal white blood cells concentrated in the lymph system. Examples of this type of cancer include Hodgkin’s disease and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas.
• Myelomas – rare tumors from antibody-producing or blood cell-producing areas in the bone marrow.

Cancer is often described by what stage it is in. Staging in cancer refers to a scale used to determine amount of cancer, its location, size, and degree of containment. The four different levels listed below describe the stages of cancer.
• Stage I – earliest, most curable stage. Local tumor only.
• Stage II – some spreading of cancer to surrounding tissue and maybe nearby lymph nodes.
• Stage III – involves spreading to distant lymph nodes
• Stage IV – most advanced, least easily cured. Cancer has spread to distant organs.

Why do some people get cancer and others don’t? What is the trigger that turns these healthy cells into mutants? What causes cancer? There are at least 33 contributing causes, according to various researchers. Each of these factors could be an article in itself so I’ll just provide you with the list for now. Breast Cancer Prevention and The American Cancer Industry

I am angry because The United States has yet to pass prevention laws.

Unlike the European Union, which passed a cosmetics safety law in 2005, and a chemical safety law in 2006, the U.S. Government continues to allow known and potentially carcinogenic ingredients to be added to our food supply, our air and water, our cosmetics, our body care products, our dry cleaning process, and our home and garden supplies.

As a result of the European Union’s Safe Cosmetics Act, most of the shampoos, body lotions, hair dyes and lipsticks now in our American bathrooms, are considered unsafe and banned from sale in Europe. Imported non-organic meat and dairy products from the US are also banned. This is because most meat and dairy now sold in US supermarkets, contain added animal growth hormones, which research shows contribute to breast and other type of cancers.

Meanwhile, U.S., rates are the highest in the world. In the 1950’s, only 1 in 20 American women could expect a breast diagnosis in her lifetime. Today, in some EU countries, that number is one out of 15, in Great Britain it is 1 out of 9 and in the U.S. it is now 1 out of 7.

The European Union’s government believes it has the responsibility and the ability to protect its citizens from this epidemic that has gained momentum in both the US and Europe for the past fifty years. So why hasn’t the US passed similar prevention laws?
