He Died After Chemotherapy And A Shot of Blood-Count-Boosting (Epoetin) Injection

February 26th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Some years ago, one young man came to see me for his cancer. He was prescribed some herbs which he did not take. He preferred to go for instead. Not too long after that his wife came to my house in the middle of the night and asked for help. She told me that after , her husband’s red blood counts dropped drastically. The doctor gave him an injection to boost up the blood counts. He suffered a blood clot in his thigh and had to undergo an emergency operation. She wanted me to help him with the herbs. But it was not to be, her husband died soon afterwards.

In the early days of my practice, I did not document patients who came to see me. So, I only have vague recollection of some outstanding cases. This was one outstanding case that I remember, involving a young professional. When he had cancer, I could see the agony and hopelessness in the face of his young wife.

This case would not have resurface and find itself in print if not for some articles I have just read in the net about erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs). ESA is commonly used to treat anemia, i.e., a lower than normal number of red blood cells. Examples of such drugs are Procrit, Epogen and Aranesp. These are synthetic, genetically engineered version of a natural glycoprotein known as erythroprotein. The US-FDA had approved the use of ESAs to treat anemia in patients with chronic kidney failure and in patients with cancer after had lowered their blood counts. To patients in Malaysia, each injection cost a good tidy sum of money.

According to Alison Tonka, associate editor of the British Medical Journal (BMJ) “thousands of patients worldwide rely on synthetic ESAs to alleviate the anemia that accompanies chronic renal disease and for cancer.” Two news articles in the BMJ had these titles: “Safety of anemia drug erythopoitin is to be reviewed” and “FDA calls for warning on anaemia drugs amid reports of incentives to doctors.” The main message from these articles is that more patients treated with ESAs died from the treatment rather than live longer or are helped. That is to say, ESAs increase the risk of death. Studies also showed that at a dose higher than indicated ESAs could cause increased risk of blood clots, stroke and heart attack. In patients with head and neck cancer, higher doses of ESAs promoted tumour growth.

In November 2006, February and March 2007, the US-FDA put out safety alerts informing the public about this safety concerns. From the net, I learn the following:

1. ESAs can cause serious and life-threatening side effects.

2. A greater number of deaths occurred in patients treated with these blood-count-boosting injections than in patients who did not receive .

3. ESAs cause increased rate of tumour growth in patients who had radiation therapy for their head and neck cancers and for their metastatic .

4. ESAs cause higher chance of death and increased number of blood clots, strokes, heart failure and heart attacks in patients with chronic kidney failure.

All users of this blood-count-boosting drugs need to be told that they are at increased risk of death as well as serious cardiovascular complications including stroke, heart attack, blood clots to the heart, lungs, brain and major blood vessels. Those with chronic kidney failure given ESAs may suffer from seizures and hypertensive encephalopathy, i.e., swelling of the brain caused by very high blood pressure.

I now know why this young man met his premature death after plus a shot of erythropoiesis stimulating agent (ESA) that the doctor gave him. Goethe, a German philosopher once wrote: “There is nothing more frightening than active ignorance.”

Colorectal Cancer - She Declined Chemotherapy and Opted for Herbs

February 26th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Amy (not real name) was 48 years old when she was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon (caecum) cancer in 2001. She underwent a hemicolectomy on 5 November 2001. The histopathology report indicated: “moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of caecum involving pericolic fat. The pericolic (6/10) and apical nodes (2/2) are involved by metastatic tumour (Duke C 2. T3 N2 Mx). The resected margin are free.”

Her surgeon recommended but Amy declined. She opted for herbs instead. She came to CA Care in November 2001 and was started on herbs: Capsule A, GI (1) Tea, Lympho-Tea (stopped mid-2006) and C-tea. She has been taking these herbs “religiously” ever since.

It has been six years and Amy is doing fine. Over the years she had gone back to her surgeon for surveillance check up and there was nothing amiss.

I met up with Amy and her husband on 18 September 2006 and had a chat.

Question: You underwent an operation but did not go for , radiotherapy or take any doctor’s medication? You started to take herbs and are still doing so up to this day. Are you a healthy person – are you okay?

Amy: Yes, I am healthy. I think I am healthier now than I was before. This is because I don’t have any more gastric problem — unless of course when I over-eat or when I am hungry. Otherwise, I don’t have any gastric problem. I sleep better. Energy wise I am good. Before I was on the herbs, I would be sleepy by 9 to 10 p.m. Just one or two weeks after I started to take the herbs until this day, I am still not sleepy even if it is 12 mid-night. And remember, I wake up at 6 o’clock every morning. Even that, I feel fresh the whole day and I don’t feel sleepy or tired and am full of energy. I don’t need to sleep in the afternoon.

Q: After the surgery, were you asked to go for ?

Husband: After the operation, the doctor was asking us to start as soon as possible. To the doctor, we must not delay this treatment.

A: The operation was done on 5 November. A week later, I had to go back to the hospital for a follow up examination. The doctor told me that I would need to go for 30 sessions of . One week would be 5 sessions. I would then have to take two or three weeks rest and then start the cycle again. The doctor was telling me that I must do this quickly if not the cancer can come back again. I was asked to fix a chemo-pot but I declined. After this, I decided to come to CA Care instead.

Q: After you decided to take herbs instead of undergoing , did you get any pressure from your doctors — that this might not be the right approach?

Husband: No. This was because we did not go back to the oncologist any more. If we were to go back to him, we might get such “pressure”. We started to take the herbs. She was not getting worse. Instead she was getting better. So, we shut our mind to all other external pressures or advice and kept our focus on the herbs and on what we have decided to do.

Q: How did you feel after talking to the oncologist?

A: I felt very depressed. I did not like the way he talked to me. It appeared like he wanted to do business — then he said, you must do this and do that. He was not kind like the other doctors. He was very insensitive. We were very unhappy and decided to come and see you instead.

Husband: After we saw the oncologist, we knew that we could not “click” with him. On the other hand, the surgeon was a very kind man. When we told him that we would not go for , he said: “Do what you believe in.” He was more supportive than the oncologist who was not friendly at all. We never went back to see the oncologist ever again.

A: In fact to this day, my surgeon is very supportive. When I went back for my routine check up, he still enquired if I was still taking the herbs. He also asked if I ate meat, and that I was still on vegetables, etc. I think my surgeon was very happy to see me well.

Husband: We were very fortunately to have a nice and kind surgeon.

Q: If you look back, would you do the same thing all over again with regards to your ?

A: I am satisfied with what I have gone through and what I did. There were no regrets. I still remember what my husband told me: “Amy, if you do not want to go for and wanted to go on the herbs, you have to believe in what you are going to do. If you don’t believe that the herbs are going to work for you, then don’t take them. I want you to put in your heart and soul to do this”.

Q: Besides taking the herbs and following our diet recommendation, did you take any other herbs or supplements?

A: No supplements. I took fruit juices for the first few years. It was only later that I started to take fish oil and sometimes garlic pills. Apart from that I was and am entirely on your herbs.

Q: After taking the herbs, how long did you get to experience their effects?

A: When I first came to collect the herbs, I was told that I would pass out a lot of smelly stools. That would be the first sign of cleansing. It happened exactly like I was told when I started the herbs. I passed out a lot of dark stools. The smell was real awful. I felt exhausted after this cleansing. This process went on for about 5 to 6 days after I started to take the herbs. Then, things gradually went back to normal.

Q: After taking the herbs for a week, did you feel any better?

A: Of course. I felt better. I was not sleepy anymore. Energy wise I was better.

Q: Over this five years, did the herbs and CA Care made any impact on you?

A: Yes, of course. When we came to collect herbs, Khadijah and Johan always have a lot of good words and encouragement for me. Then, I also remember when I came here and I met you. You talked to me and gave encouraging advice. These words still stuck with me. You said: “It is not the herbs alone – it is also your will to live and wanting to get well. Besides, patients must keep to their good diet”. “Laska” was my favorite food. Because of your words, I dared not eat “laksa” for many years!

Managing Cancer: A Choice of Three Options

February 24th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

The doctor removed a lump from the breast of a lady and found it to be malignant. Next, the doctor wanted to remove the whole breast. After the usual “recipe” would be: , radiotherapy and probably take an oral drug called tamoxifen. This lady and her husband came to seek my advice. We made it clear to them that they had to make their own decisions. We could only advise and give information.

We advised them to relax, take time to reflect and do not be hasty in wanting to do something very quickly, for each step taken may mean a lot in terms of a possible recovery, alleviating emotional problems and sufferings. Of course, the easiest option would be to hand over all responsibility and accountability to the doctor. Just follow exactly what the doctors say. To some patients, this is the obvious and best option, as “doctors know best”. But some patients would prefer or want to explore other options for .

Below is a brief, one-page summary of advice of what they should do if they have cancer: But take note: If you have cancer, know that no one on earth can guarantee you a cure. At best, there will only be remission.

1) The remission can last for a few months or for a few years. The cancer may come back again.

2) In general, it appears that neither modern medicine nor holistic natural medicine can claim great
success at curing cancer. At most, there is a 30% to 40% success rate. What is meant by success? When people mention a success rate, the term is vague. Anyway, the fact is that about 60% of cancer patients would, unfortunately, be left high and dry not knowing what else to do after their treatments have failed them.

3) Even if you are well after you have undergone the necessary treatments, it is foolish to assume that you are done with cancer. Cancer may not be done with you, yet. Take appropriate and necessary steps to prevent recurrence or to prolong your remission period.

4) What seems to be a realistic aim in managing cancer is to be able to live a quality life, i.e., to be as normal or healthy as possible knowing that cancer cells may still be in your body. It may be wiser for you to learn how to live with your own cancer cells.

5) The doctors may prescribe drugs, e.g., tamoxifen, to prevent the cancer from coming back. This is not necessarily effective, although popping pills into the mouth is an easy task. The holistic healers ask you to change your lifestyle and diet, take herbs, exercise, etc. For many people, these are hard chores to put into practice, for herbs may taste repulsive to some people. But in the long run, a holistic approach to health may be better for you.

Consider the Following Three Options

OPTION ONE:

Seek only treatments of modern medicine i.e. surgery, , radiotherapy, etc. Bonus: YOU CAN EAT WHAT YOU LIKE and also continue with your old lifestyle.
Literature says some people suffer badly from the side effects of these treatments — vomiting, total loss of hair, suffering possible damage to the liver, kidneys, heart, etc. Some people may even die from the treatments themselves rather than from the cancer. But to most people, medical treatments are still considered the best, for it is perceived to be a scientific and proven method. So they follow and do what the doctors say without questioning or thinking.

OPTION TWO:

Seek alternative medicine with no aggressive medical treatments. This is as good or bad just as there are good and bad apples. If these alternative healers promise you a cure or you need to spend a great amount of money for the procedure, my advice to you is to be very cautious. He may be after your money not the cancer. For various reasons, most doctors consider alternative medicine as quackery.

OPTION THREE:

Seek integrative therapy. This is marrying the above two options. Unfortunately, you need to change your diet and your old lifestyle. It does not make sense to continue polluting and abusing your body further. We advocate this path although we also end up being called quacks at times. But we also know that there are many people, even those in the medical fraternity who silently and morally agree with what we are doing.

To help you make a decision, we have drawn up a check list of eleven affirmative statements associated with each option. Put a tick in the appropriate column, whether you agree or disagree. At the end of the exercise add up the number of items you agree or disagree with and this should represent what you ought to do.

Consider the following carefully

OPTION ONE: Go for medical treatments only.

1. I have total trust in medical doctors for they are the best persons to know how to handle my cancer problems.

2. I consider all those talks about alternative or complementary/ integrative medicine as quackery.

3. I consider a change of diet, lifestyle and doing exercises as too much of a chore or routine to practise.

4. I have no time and I want everything done quickly and be done with.

5. I leave my life in the hands of my doctors. In that way I need not worry so much. I only need to follow what my doctors tell me to do.I am very sure that my doctors can cure my cancer.

6. I am very sure that my doctors can cure my cancer.

7. When I do /radiotherapy, I am aware that both the good and bad cells in my body get destroyed.

8. When I undergo , I am aware that I may suffer many side effects like vomiting, hair loss, the destruction of blood cells and even failures of the vital organs. But I trust my doctors to be able to help and revive me.

9. When I undergo radiotherapy, I am aware that I may suffer numerous short-term and long-term side effects. But I trust my doctors all the same. These do not bother me.

10. I am aware that some chemo-drugs or radiation used on me are themselves cancer causing. As a result of their use, I have the additional risk of getting more or other cancers as well, besides the one I am currently having. Anyway, this is a small risk which I believe may not happen to me.

11. After all the expenses, sufferings, etc., I am aware that all these procedures may not necessarily give me a cure at all. I may be worse off than when I first contracted cancer

OPTION TWO: Go for alternative medicine only.

1. I have heard or seen many patients who suffer, spend their life savings to pay for the high cost of medical treatments which ultimately lead them nowhere. There is no cure. I therefore do not trust doctors entirely.
2. All along I have been taking herbs and seeing holistic healers for my health problems. So I fully believe in holistic procedures.

3. I am not concerned about taking herbs or doing holistic procedures. I am not bothered about comments if these are scientific or not. What matters to me is that the herbs or procedures DO help me and make me better.

4. I am not prepared to risk my life and health due to the various side effects brought about by the medical treatments.

5. I am not prepared to undergo because I do not want to suffer all the side effects associated with it. Even though the doctors can help with the immediate side effects by giving me more drugs, I am more concerned with the long-term side effects which doctors do not know about or are unable to help with.

6. I am not prepared to undergo radiotherapy because I do not want to suffer all the side effects of this treatment. I also do not want to risk suffering long-term side effects.

7. I do not want to undergo medical treatments because I may end up having more or other types of cancers as a result of the invasive treatments I would have to undergo.

8. After all the medical treatments, I am not sure if I can get better or not. I may be worse off than when I first started. Therefore, I would rather go for the less invasive methods of treatment. I may have a better quality of life.

9. I am aware that alternative holistic procedures cannot cure me but they are not necessarily worse than medical treatments.

10. I am aware that following holistic procedures mean I need to spend time cultivating my health. I am prepared to allocate time for my own self. I do not mind taking those herbs, change to a new healthy lifestyle and stick to a good diet.
11. I shall read, talk, ask and seek advice from experts of various fields in search of my own . I am prepared to do what it takes to make me well. My life is in my hands. Others can only advise me what to do.

OPTION THREE: Go for integrative medicine — Options 1 2

1. I am a person who cannot or do not want to make any decisions on my own. I depend on others to help me.

2. I do not fully trust the medical doctors but I cannot ignore them totally either. I do not have strong opinions for or against doctors or holistic healers. I believe that both have their roles and both want to help me with my cancer.

3. I want to get the benefit of both worlds. I wish to see what medical science can do while I also hope to adopt holistic ways to benefit me. In this way I do not put all my eggs in one basket.

4. When the doctor asks me to go for , I would follow his advice but I am fully aware that there are risks and side effects.

5. When the doctor asks me to go for radiotherapy, I would follow his advice too, although I know that there are risks and side effects because of the treatment.

6. When the doctor prescribes me drugs I would take them. In addition I am also taking herbs and doing other things that I feel are helping me in my .

7. I do not fully agree with the doctor’s advice that I can eat anything I wish. I cannot simply eat anything I like; I need to change to a healthy diet and lifestyle.

8. I am prepared to go through the various inconveniences of boiling the herbs, changing my diet, lifestyle, etc., for as long as these help me to get better.

9. The main reason why I want to combine both treatment approaches is because I want to get well. I am not bothered if it is the medical treatment or the holistic ways that help.

10. Though some people say that taking herbs is not scientific or an old-fashioned idea, I am not bothered by such comments. What matters to me is that they are effective.

11. I shall give the herbs a try. If they work for me, I shall continue taking them If they do not, I shall stop taking them.

Quackery, Luck or God’s Blessing?

In July 1999, my husband was invited to be one of four panelists in a live talk show on Complementary Medicine on Cancer, which was aired on a Malaysian television (Global, TV2, RTM). The host posed this question to him (Chris Teo): “People tend to think of complementary medicine as quackery or hocus-pocus. What is your response to that?”

Chris Teo: “Definitely, complementary medicine is not quackery. It is based on experience. It is based on knowledge accumulated over thousands of years. I do not believe that technology by itself can solve this problem of cancer. To my mind, we have to look at it from a point of view that is different from what is being conventionally done. Well, the conventional method is to destroy the tumor. The methods of medical science need not be the best in this world. I am a scientist with 26 years of experience teaching science and I feel I know what science is. I feel that I am fortunate and lucky to be involved in traditional medicine. If anyone wants to accuse me of being a quack, he has to think twice because I understand science. I always tell cancer patients: See your doctors, by all means. But one thing, you should know the limits of medical science. Doctors are no more infallible as much as anybody else.”

As the discussion got “heated” up, the host shot another question: “You had patients who came to see you and they have been doing well, have responded you said. Do you think that you are just lucky and whoever have come to see you were also just lucky? Is that what it is all about?”

Chris Teo: “Alright, let us talk about luck. If I have helped one person and he is OK, you can call that luck. If he brings along another friend next week and I can help again, you might call that coincidence. If you bring another person and another person and another person and it adds up to a thousand, do you want to say all that is due to luck? Do you want to say that it is a fluke? My results with cancer people are not luck. That is God-given.”

Let us end by saying this. Many Chinese have known and lived by their traditional medicine for thousands of years. To them, the question of whether what they have been doing is scientific or not does not arise at all nor is it of any concern. To them, what matters is that the herbs work.

Nature’s Cancer Fighters

February 21st, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Vitamin pills and supplements are no substitute for eating our vegetables. Scientists are now finding out why. It just so happens that fruits and vegetables are loaded with compounds called phytochemicals and antioxidants that demonstrably lower the risk of cancer.

Phytochemicals are not related to vitamins or minerals. They are not even nutrients. Phyto is Latin for plant. These are natural chemicals only found in plants. These food chemicals cannot be obtained from animal products. What makes these substances so exciting is that study after study continues to reveal the many cancer-protective benefits of the different phytochemicals.

You can lower your risk of cancer quite a bit by eating more fruits and vegetables. More than 200 major studies over the past 25 years have consistently shown that high plant food eaters are about half as likely to have cancer as those who eat few plant foods. This is also true for heart disease, adult diabetes, and certain other lifestyle diseases.

Phytochemicals protect against cancer usually as a blocking agent or suppressing agents. Blocking agents work on the carcinogens. They prevent them from affecting the body’s cells. For example:

- Indoles found in cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli) work as blocking agents by increasing colon enzymes that can deactivate some of these carcinogens.

- Others block the ability of bacteria to attach themselves to the surface of the cell.

Suppressing agents work on the body’s own cells, combating malignant changes that have been started by free radicals or carcinogens. They can slow tumor growth by suppressing the cancer cells ability to reproduce. They can suppress certain enzymes that cancer cells need in order to grow.

Some fruits and vegetables contain more potent cancer fighters than others.

1. For colon cancers, it is the cruciferous vegetables.

2. A high fruit and carrot intake appears to decreases the risk of lung cancers significantly.

3. Eating one or more onions a day were found to have only half the stomach of those who never ate onions.

4. Soy is an absolute treasure of cancer-protective phytochemicals. Studies suggest that soy foods diminish in many areas, including breast, colon, rectum, lung, and stomach.

The good news about phytochemicals is that you do not have to eat the foods raw to get the benefits. While a few of these compounds might lose some effectiveness when cooked, most still hold their medicinal properties. It also does not matter whether the vegetables are canned, frozen, juiced, or peeled. Pickling, boiling, microwaving, baking, and drying, are also ok.

The National Cancer Institute advocates a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Some people do not eat any at all.

Like phytochemicals, antioxidants are also natural chemicals found in food, but they are not limited to plant foods. The term antioxidant refers to a specific function they perform – they help the body dispose of free radicals that can genetically damage normal cells and set the stage for cancer.

“What are free radicals you ask?”

Every cell in our body is made up of molecules. Usually every molecule has electrons in range around its nucleus. These electrons usually come in pairs. This makes the molecule stable. However, some molecules have electrons that are not in pairs, leaving them extremely unstable. These molecules are called free radicals.

Free radicals have been found to have a role in at least 50 diseases. They have been known to damage DNA and are linked to cancer. It is important to strengthen our body’s antioxidant defenses with nature’s fighters.

Jason Hunter is a natural health advocate. He is webmaster of a natural health web site called Home Health and Natural Remedies. To find out more about fruits and vegetables that contain the most phytochemicals and antioxidants, visit:

Colon Cancer and the Nature of Human Being

February 21st, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Thean (not real name) was 86 years old when he was diagnosed with recto-sigmoid cancer in October 1999. There was no evidence of metastatic spread. Due to his age, Thean declined medical interventions. So he did not receive the standard medical package of surgery, or radiotherapy. Six month after the diagnosis Thean’s daughter came to seek our help on 2 April 2000. Thean had rashes probably due to the side effects of the antibiotics that he was taking, otherwise he was a normal, healthy person. Thean was prescribed Capsule A, C-tea and GI-tea.

After this first visit, I did not have any further records about him or his progress. However, his daughter came to our centre once in a while, to pick up herbs for her father. Seven years later, on 6 May 2007, I met the daughter who came to our centre to pick more herbs. I was told that in late April 2007, Thean had blood in his stools. He was sent to a private hospital where he stayed for two days undergoing medical examinations. At his age of 93, he declined medical interventions and was sent home.

Thean is an independent man who cherished his freedom. He insisted on living on his own, in spite of his advanced age. Since his wife passed away he has been living by himself in his own home, refusing to move and live with his son’s family.

When asked what the doctor said about his condition, the daughter’s reply was: “I don’t know.” I asked if Thean has been taking herbs. She did not think that he has been taking them anymore. At best, Thean only took Capsule A. In view of the deterioration of Thean’s condition, I suggested that Thean take Capsule A, GI-One and GI-Two Teas. Her answer to me was: “I need to ask the son first (i.e., her brother first) if he is willing to boil the herbs for him or not.” The daughter does not live in the same town as Thean and does not know much about what is going on. Her responsibility is to come and buy the Capsule A and pass it on to her brother’s family. On the other hand, the son’s family who lives in the same town as Thean has the responsibility to see the old man lives a normal life in his own home. I requested that the son bring me the medical report.

I was told that Thean has nine children and the one who comes to collect the herbs regularly is the first daughter in the family.

Comments: This is a straightforward medical case history. Medically, it is interesting in that even without medical treatment the patient survived his recto-sigmoid cancer. He had already lived for seven years with the help of the herbs, without any medical intervention. It is interesting to note too that Thean’s nephew is a medical doctor and it was he who asked Thean’s family to seek our help. CA Care is known to have helped many patients with cancer using herbs. Many people who know and want another option often come to us. From the “rational and traditional” viewpoints of patients in Malaysia, the options available to Thean at this point in time (then aged 86 and now 93) is a choice between the “devil or the deep blue sea”. The result obtained from this herbal therapy is indeed amazing. And even with a recurrence Thean is not about to give up yet. If he decides to take the herbs diligently we predict that Thean can still live on.

Another facet of his case is about the nature of human being. Though Thean has nine children, most of them have moved away from his home and found their own priorities in life. Thean ended up a lone, independent and stubborn (that is what the daughter described him) old man fighting a battle against cancer. I don’t know if this is a sad case or not. I would love to imagine that as we grow old, we would be surrounded by many loving children, grand children and great grandchildren. With them around us, our battle against illness is made easier.

Unlike the cultures of the modern world, to us Orientals, filial piety is our way of life or lifeblood. It is expected of all children to respect, honour and to take care of the parents and elders in old age. I am reminded of a Chinese saying: “A mother can feed, care and educate ten children, but ten children cannot take care of one mother.” Now, I wonder if the norm has become obsolete or we have outlived such era.
