Two Comparative Models Of Cancer Prevention: Which Is the Better Model of Truth?

February 13th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Texas governor Rick Perry will most likely face some stiff opposition for the use of his executive order last week. He bypassed the state legislature to make Texas the first state to require school aged girls to be vaccinated against a sexually transmitted virus known as HPV (human papillomavirus).

This virus is thought to cause in women years after being infected. HPV eventually infects over half of all sexually active people and also causes genital warts.

The vaccine being promoted is called ‘Gardasil’ made by Merk & Co., a new vaccine that claims to block four common strains of the HPV virus. Merk says that ‘Gardasil’ prevents 99 percent of infections by two HPV stains that cause about 70 percent of and two strains that cause most genital warts.

The grim statistics estimate that around 9,700 new cases of will be diagnosed this year in the United States resulting in about 3,700 deaths.

Starting in the fall of 2008 girls as young as 11 to 12 entering the sixth grade will be required to receive ‘Gardasil’ in Texas. This mandate is effective until Perry or a successor repeals it. The legislature has no authority to change it.

Legislative aids and parent advocacy groups against vaccinations are looking for ways around this executive order. Their main cause for concern is in the interfering of their rights as parents to chose medical decisions for their children. Current Texas law allows parents to opt out of inoculations by filing an affidavit objecting to vaccinations on religious or philosophical reasons.

The success Merk & Co. has had in Texas has them using heavy lobbying tactics by continuing these bankrolling efforts to get other states to pass laws like the one in Texas.

Three doses at a cost of $120.00 each for a total cost of $360.00 to inoculate for this viral infection has many doctors refusing to even stock it. They are saying problems with insurance companies reimbursing them is totally inadequate and they are fed up with rising vaccine prices.

What will be the long term track record of ‘Gardasil’? No one knows for sure and will not for some time to come. Apparent testing is now being done on young school girls in Texas required to get vaccinations. How long of a time span should drug manufacturers be required to have to prove benefits and safety results of new disease prevention drugs? How have track records for other disease prevention vaccinations worked out in the pros and cons? Intelligent questions such as these makes it obvious not enough time has passed to be requiring a new mandatory vaccination. Fast tracking any new drug has not been proven to be safe.

In another model comparison to there is more positive medical evidence emerging every day that shows without a doubt that implementing diet changes works rather well if not better than drug treatments. Objective study after study has shown conclusively that a diet high in whole food nutrition is the winning key that unlocks the door of disease.

Thousands of objective alternative studies done around the world have been undertaken for many years in studying the prevention of many diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and stroke with dietary changes. Reputable whole food complete supplements and using other diet changes have produced impressive results.

Despite the impressive amount of evidence emerging on the scene people continue to eat more poorly than ever. As parents we think we do not have the time or the resources to look after our or our children’s nutritional needs. There are so many distractions and demands on our time making nutrition a distant competitor to other things we consider more important.

When thinking this way consider these statistics:

Cancer kills more children than any other disease.
In the last 20 years overweight children has increased 50%, and extremely overweight children has nearly doubled.
40 million children have abnormally high cholesterol levels.
By age 12, about 70% of our children have developed the beginning stages of hardening of the arteries.

It seems rather obvious that as a nation and culture we are in complete denial of our poor eating habits. We are simply not paying enough attention to good sound nutritional practices. Many are paying the price as well as our children who, if left to continue eating poorly, will live shorter lives than any generation before them.

Will pharmaceutical companies be able to save us from our poor eating habits? I rather doubt it as this model is failing at an expensive and alarming rate. Evidence is coming to the forefront on the ability drugs have to harm more people than they save. If our legislatures allow the continuation of this model medical bankruptcy of this great country could be the end result.

When choosing to explore nature’s wisdom you may be pleasantly surprised to find out which of these two models validates truth. By knowing more you will be enabled to do more, and it is in this doing that produces the believing!

Green Tea’s Role in Cancer Prevention

February 11th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Green tea has recently caught the attention of scientists working to discover ways to prevent and treat cancer. Researchers began looking at green tea because of the significantly lower rates of certain diseases in Asian culture, where green tea is widely consumed. Tea is the most consumed beverage in the world, after water; so if we can harness health properties in this beverage, it could have huge impact on our health.

And, if we can determine exactly how green tea is effective in preventing cancer, we’ll be well on our way to eradicating one of the most serious killers in our society. There has been a large amount of research on the subject, and we have learned many things.

First, we know that green tea has some of the most powerful anti-oxidants, and we know that anti-oxidants are important to preventing many diseases, including cancer. Anti- oxidants are important because they combat free radicals in our bodies. These free radicals are created as our bodies convert food to energy. If they are not neutralized, they damage our cells and DNA, leading to disease and premature aging.

So, to prevent your risk of cancer, along with other diseases, doctors recommend a diet high in anti-oxidants. And, green tea is one of the best components of a disease preventing diet, because it is rich in anti-oxidants and is simple to add to our diets.

There have been many studies that link green tea with . One article available on the subject was published by the UK Tea Council. This article discusses the many ways that green tea may be helpful in preventing, and even treating, cancer. It also discusses the wide availability of green tea and green tea supplements This article leads to the conclusion that green tea is effective at preventing many forms of cancer.

It is truly amazing to read the research about green tea and cancer. It has been shown, in particular to have great significance in preventing cancers of the digestive system, for example.

It is believed that since the tea itself passes through the digestive tract, it minimizes inflammation in this area of the body. In addition, since this is where the anti-oxidants are absorbed, it is found to have a significant effect.

Green tea has also been found to be particularly effective in preventing, and even treating, . In fact, one study reported that green tea, when administered along with , enhanced the effectiveness of the drugs. It was found that cancer cells showed a higher concentration of the drugs in patients who were given green tea as an adjunct therapy than in patients who received alone.

Other research has shown that green tea may also be effective when applied topically; preventing and treating , for example.

Green tea has also been shown to prevent cardiovascular disease by helping to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol. Bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) oxidizes and becomes the hard plaque that clogs our arteries, restricting blood flow.

When arterial flow is restricted, a heart attack or stroke can happen if a blood clot forms and further blocks the artery. Green tea prevents the oxidation of the cholesterol so that it cannot harden and stick to arterial walls.

In cultures where green tea is consumed, and incidence of cancer is significantly lower, it is consumed in fairly large quantities over a period of many years. Asians typically begin consuming green tea early in life, and drink several cups a day every day for their entire life. Green tea is even more prevalent in Asian life than coffee is in American life. There are even ceremonies centered on tea!

So, if you want to make the most of green tea’s cancer preventing properties, you should find a way to get a fairly large dose – and you should get your dosage each day. This is easier today than ever, because green tea has gained popularity and is more widely available than ever.

Green tea is often mixed with fruit flavors, as many people don’t particularly enjoy the grassy flavor of the plain tea. And, these flavored varieties are just as healthy. For a real health boost, try green tea flavored with blueberry or pomegranate, both of which are also very high in anti-oxidants.

Green tea has also become widely available already bottled for drinking chilled. This makes it very convenient to carry your green tea with you, so that you can drink it all day long, just like the Japanese!

If you still don’t think you can get enough green tea even with all the choices available, then green tea supplements might be for you. They’re available in capsule form, and you can just take them right along with your vitamins. They contain all the anti-oxidants of a cup of green tea, right in a little pill.

Whatever form you choose, make green tea a part of your regular life. It’s healthy and delicious and may prevent many diseases, too!

Preventing Prostate Cancer

February 9th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men. In fact, only is more common. Over 200,000 men will be diagnosed with this year, and one in six men will be diagnosed with the disease during their lifetime.

But, there is some good news about , too. Of the one in six men who will be diagnosed with , only one in 34 will die from the disease. And, death rates from are declining because of earlier detection and better treatments. Prostate cancer is usually a slow growing form of cancer, making it an excellent target for prevention.

Who Gets Prostate Cancer?

While doctors don’t fully understand exactly what causes , there are some risk factors that do increase a man’s likelihood of developing this disease.

Age – Most men who are diagnosed with are over the age of 65. By the time a man reaches the age of 80, his chances of getting are greater than 50%. However, at this age, is often not fatal, because it grows so slowly that other health factors are more significant.

Ethnicity –Doctors do not understand why, but African-American and Hispanic men are at a greater risk for than Caucasian men.
Asian and Native American men have the lowest risk for developing this disease.

Diet – Diets high in saturated fats and low in fruits and vegetables increase a man’s risk of developing . Conversely, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, high in anti-oxidants and low in saturated fats reduces a man’s risk. Some foods that are particularly thought to be important in decreasing your risk of include:

• Soy

• Tomatoes – the lycopene in tomatoes is a powerful anti-oxidant and is thought to be particularly effective in preventing .

• Omega 3 Fatty Acids – such as those found in salmon and mackerel

• Vitamin D

• Selenium

Family History – A man’s risk for developing is greater when he has had a father or brother who has developed the disease. This is especially true if his relatives developed the disease at a young age.

How Can I Prevent Prostate Cancer?

Well, obviously diet is of significant concern in preventing . Make certain that your diet is low in saturated fats and high in fruits and vegetables. Stick to lean cuts of meat and be sure to get your fair share of fish that is rich in omega 3 fatty acids.

Another important aspect of protecting your prostate health is seeing your doctor. Currently, there are two ways of testing for . The first is a simple digital rectal exam. Most men will have this exam as part of a regular physical beginning after age 40.

In this test, the doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger in the anus and manually feels the prostate gland. The doctor can feel if the prostate is enlarged, or if lumps can be felt. This is an important exam, but it’s not perfect, because the doctor can only feel the bottom and sides of the prostate gland. There could still be problems with the top of the gland, or there could be tumors too small to feel.

The second test is called a PSA (prostate specific antigen) test. This is a blood test that checks the level of a protein made by the prostate. A normal prostate makes just a little of this protein, but when a man has , he typically produces very high levels of PSA.

Finally, along with your healthy diet, consider adding green tea. Green tea has been shown in many studies to prevent some forms of cancer, among them. There has been a fairly wide body of research on this subject, as well as on the ability of other foods and vitamins (such as the ones listed above) to prevent .

The Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial is a document that examines all of these possible preventers, and looks at the evidence that exists to support their effectiveness. This report has been published by the UK Tea Council and covers much of the research that supports the theory that green tea can prevent . In addition, this report discusses the strides made in prevention, and why this cancer in particular should be a target for prevention, rather than treatment.

Men often assume that at some time in their lives they’ll be facing prostate problems, or possibly . And, it is still a common health issue that many men will face in their life time. But, if all men can practice some simple prevention techniques, such as eating a healthy diet that includes fruits, vegetables and green tea, and visit their doctor regularly, it’s very possible that we can even further reduce the number of men who suffer .

Colorectal Cancer Prevention and Diet

February 2nd, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Colorectal and diet have a lot in common.

After all, your colon and your rectum are responsible for things like nutrient absorption, water management and elimination of waste.

You don’t need a scientist to tell you that garbage in equals garbage out. But let’s hear what the experts have to say anyway.

Many studies on colorectal and diet have found that red and processed meats are a major contributor. However, a group of doctors in France were unconvinced by “existing evidence” and decided to do a comprehensive study for themselves.

So they followed a mere 478,040 men and women for nearly five years and finally concluded that red and processed meat was positively a cause of AND that eating fish actually considerably reduced a person’s risk. [Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Vol. 15;97:906-16]

This isn’t the only research that implicated omega 3 oil from fish as a factor in reducing .

Doctors associated with the New York University Women’s Health Study closely watched 14,727 women for an average of 7 years. They found “a progressive decline in risk of with increasing intake of fish and shellfish.”

And there’s more. They also found a similar decline in the risk for women inversely proportionate to the amount of calcium they consumed. In laymen’s terms, that means the women who ate the most calcium had the lowest risk.

But interestingly, they weren’t as certain about the red meat connection as our friends in France were. As a matter of fact, the doctors at NYU said the association of red meat to “remains unclear.” [Nutrition & Cancer, Vol. 28:276-81]

Another fascinating study out of Harvard suggests that it’s not so much the red meat and fats, but rather our “western” lifestyle that causes the problem.

They cite obesity, physical inactivity, a diet low in vegetables and fruit, while high in red meat and processed foods, all contributes to one common denominator of this lifestyle – high levels of insulin in the blood!

The researchers hypothesize that elevated blood insulin “promotes colon carcinogenesis” because insulin is a “growth factor” that causes cellular division of epithelial cells in the colon. [Cancer Causes & Control, Vol. 6, No. 2:164-79]

So what are we to do about colorectal and diet? It’s easy as pie as long as you don’t eat the pie.

Stick with whole foods, including lots of vegetables, fresh fruit, whole grains and other fiber rich foods, unprocessed oils, like extra virgin olive oil, lean meats (mostly fish and chicken, but an occasional T-bone won’t hurt), low fat dairy and plenty of pure water.

Studies suggest it’s important to cut way back on alcohol, practice stress management and exercise regularly (very important!)

Following these guidelines will not only reduce your risk of , but many other cancers as well, plus heart disease and diabetes too. And it will also improve your vim, vigor and vitality!

Cancer Prevention Vitamin - It Is Real and It Is Now!

January 12th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Have we discovered a vitamin? Are vitamins really possible? Is the vitamin here?

New studies show we just might have! Some forms of cancer may be preventable with the use of a vitamin. Hardly any family in the United States has NOT had a family member die because of cancer. This could change with the addition of this vitamin to our daily diets.

There are two studies that have been conducted using very sophisticated analysis which revealed that we are close to having a vitamin. Almost half of the cases of and almost two thirds of , in the United States, have been helped with what appears to be the vitamin, Vitamin D, (25-hydroxyvitamin D). T

he data from the study showed individuals with the highest blood levels of 25(OH)D HAD the lowest risk factors for cancer. Wouldn’t it be great if we could prevent most breast cancers? The researchers for this vitamin divided the data from two studies into five equal groups from the lowest blood levels of 25(H)D to the highest level of 25(OH)D. The data showing whether or not the individuals developed cancer was also included with these studies. This is strong evidence that we are closer to developing a vitamin for .

The vitamin data from the colorectal study was an analysis of five studies relating to 25(OH)D with risk of . All these studies involved subjects with a risk of and explored the association of blood levels of 25(OH)D. The levels were then checked 25 years later for the development of .

According to one of the doctors involved in the study of the vitamin stated, “We project a two-thirds reduction in incidence with serum levels … which corresponds to a daily intake of 2,000 IU of vitamin D3. This would be best achieved with a combination of diet, supplements and 10 to 15 minutes per day in the sun.”

We have several sources of vitamin D3 (possibly THE vitamin) in our daily routine. We get vitamin D3 through exposure of the skin to sunlight, or ultraviolet B, our diet, and with nutritional supplements. (It is important to note here that the researchers underscored the importance of limiting sun exposure such that the skin does not change color (tan) or burn.) If you are sensitivity to sunlight, or you or a personal or family has a history of nonmelanoma , any amount of extra sun exposure would be inadvisable. Therefore a vitamin may be taken in higher dose for those how have this sensitivity. That vitamin is easily available in some vitamin supplements.

Analysis of the study had shown that in 2006 that a low dose of vitamin D ( vitamin) didn’t protect against within seven years of follow-up. However, the researchers wrote, the analysis did show that a higher dose (of vitamin) may reduce its incidence.
