When people think of cancer treatments, the most likely things to come to mind are probably chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Most people would be surprised to know that there are natural cancer treatments that can actually cure cancer. The reason most people have never heard of alternative cancer treatments is because they are not advertised while the pharmaceutical companies spend an enormous amount of money on advertising.

Cancer is a general term for about 100 diseases characterized by uncontrolled, abnormal growth of cells. The resulting mass, or tumor, can invade and destroy surrounding normal tissues. There are many possible causes of cancer, which fit into heredity, lifestyle, or environmental factors. Causes include smoking, a poor diet, genetic makeup, a poor immune system, and certain viruses, which cause genetic changes.

The common treatment methods are surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and bone marrow transplantation. The success rate depends on several factors for the particular patient and results will vary from person to person.

There are also alternative cancer treatments, which are not as well known as the more common methods. Alternative methods can be used alone or in conjunction with the medical treatments.

Cancer patients should definitely consider alternative cancer treatments. The popular orthodox treatments have horrible, painful side effects, damage the immunity system which can lead to more infectious diseases, kills more normal cells than cancerous cells, can destroy organs, and damage DNA. Patients in orthodox treatments will also usually be on a cocktail of medications to treat the painful side effects of the cancer treatments.

On the other hand, alternative cancer treatments cause no pain or suffering, usually strengthen the immunity system instead of damaging it, kills cancerous cells without harming normal cells, does not damage organs, and has not been known to damage DNA.

There are a wide variety of alternative treatments. They include special diets or dietary supplements, electromagnetic therapy with electrical devices, specially formulated compounds (e.g., laetrile, and homeopathic remedies), unconventional use of conventional drugs (e.g., insulin), purges or enemas, physical manipulations of the body, and various herbs or herbal preparations.

Cancer patients should educate themselves on alternative treatments by reading literature and unbiased reviews and if they are interested in pursuing them, there are clinics around the world that specialize in treating cancer through alternative methods.

Why is ganoderma lucidum now being used as one of the natural alternative treatment for cancer, especially after chemotherapy? To understand this we will need to know the therapeutic contents of ganoderma. Ganoderma Lucidum contents vary at different stages of its life. In its mycelium stage, the main content is polysaccharide, organic germanium, a whole range of vitamins and minerals whilst in its mature stage, the main contents are polysaccharide, organic germanium, adenosine, ganoderic essence,
triterpenoid, protein and fibre. The amount of polysaccharide and organic germanium in the mycelium is about four times more than that in the mature ganoderma. These differences leads to different application for the mycelium and the mature ganoderma.

Many may have read about Dr Kazuhiko Asai’s findings on the effect of organic germanium on cancer. The organic germanium does not attack the cancer cells directly but seems to stimulate the body’s immune system, making it potentially effective in the treatment of cancer as well as other degenerative diseases. As such it is a biological-response modifier that enable the body to change its responses to tumors, resulting in therapeutic benefits. At the time of his study, the cost of extracting organic germanium
from natural sources was very expensive, thus he synthesize it.

Germanium exist in two states, organic and inorganic. In its organic state, the germanium is bonded to three atoms of oxygen, making it an efficient oxygen carrier. There are many findings showing that the underlying causes of chronic diseases is due to free radical damage resulting in insufficient cellular oxygenation. Cancer cells cannot metabolize oxygen properly. Flooding the cancer cells with oxygen may retard the growth of cancer cells and may even help them to return to normal. From biochemical point of view, organic germanium seems to act a the cellular level and enhance the effects of the GAP Junctional Intercellular Communication thus preventing the spread tumor from cell to cell.

Recent development has enable ganoderma lucidum to be cultured and produced in mass production. It has brought to light that the mycelium of ganoderma lucidum can absorb organic germanium and minerals faster than ganoderma and contains about 6000 ppm organic germanium whereas other medicinal herbs contain about 800 to 2000 ppm only. Cancer is the name given to any illness resulting from one of our body’s own cells growing out of control. There are many processes that control a cell’s growth and division, each of which can go wrong. Several of these control mechanisms need to be damaged before a cell becomes cancerous. There are more than 200 different types of cancers, which are categorized in to carcinoma, sarcoma, lymphoma and leukemia based on the cells from which they arise.

The principles involved in treating cancer are – either directly destroying the cancer tissues or indirectly destroying them by depriving them of blood supply and/or their nutrition. But the irony is that whatever conventional treatment is used to destroy cancer cells do affect to some extent the normal cells also. They may damage the skin, liver, intestine the bone marrow and other rapidly multiplying cells. Sometimes the effect of the treatment is more devastating than the disease itself.

Role of Alternative Medicine in treating cancer

A larger study of Alternative medicine use in patients with different types of cancer was published in the July 2000 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. It was found that nearly 70% of the patients used at least one form alternative medicine along with the conventional treatment. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) are sponsoring a number of clinical trials at medical centers to evaluate alternative medical therapies for cancer.

Alternative medicine includes therapies like herbal remedies, vitamins, special diets, and acupuncture among others.

trial to reduce the symptoms of colorectal cancer

* Hyperbaric oxygen: In patients who had larynx removed for larynx cancer

* Massage therapy: for cancer related fatigue

* Pancreatic enzyme therapy along with specialized diet for the treatment of pancreatic cancer

* Mistletoe extract: for the treatment of solid tumors

* Wheatgrass therapy

* Macrobiotics: The macrobiotic diet is strictly vegetarian and requires you to consume about half of your daily calories from whole grains, about a quarter of your calories from vegetables, and the rest of your calories from beans, seaweed and soups

* Bioelectric therapies

* Moerman’s Anti-Cancer diet

* Hoxsey herbal therapy

* Essiac herbal therapy: Essiac is a herbal tea mixture that relieves pain and reduces the size of tumors. It contains four herbs- burdock, rhubarb, sheep sorrel and slippery elm

* Pau D’Arco herbal therapy

* Chaparral herbal therapy

* Laetrile (amygdalin): a chemical found in lima beans, raw nuts and the pits of many fruits. Amygdalin produces cyanide, which proponents claim kills cancer

* Alkaline diet: such as fruits and vegetables and restricting acidic foods

* Antioxidant found in fruits and vegetables

* Vitamins A, C and E: These are very good anti oxidants

* Detox therapies including Gonzales nutritional metabolic therapy, colon therapy, and Gerson therapy

This article is the fifth and final installment of a series on Natural Health Therapies and Cancer. The material presented is meant to inform you of complementary cancer therapies that are available in the medical community. These therapies are to be used in cooperation with other cancer treatment methods. They are not meant to replace your physician’s care.

So far, we have discussed the basics of cancer, looked at a list of causes, reviewed the various types and stages of cancer, and examined the use of nutrition and herbal supplements as forms of cancer therapy. We have also talked about various physical support therapies and their benefits for individuals with cancer. In this article, we will investigate the use of Energy Support Therapies for cancer. These methods include Electrodermal Screening, Magnetic Therapy, and Light Therapy.

‘Energy Medicine’ refers to any therapies or testing that use an energy field such as electrical, magnetic, sonic, microwave, infrared, or acoustic energy. We’ve all been exposed to energy medicine before. EKGs for heart activity, EMGs for muscle tests, EEGs for brain waves, and MRIs for scanning body parts are all examples of energy medicine techniques.

The basic principle in energy medicine is that a disease will show an energy change before it becomes a full-blown illness. The energy flow is based on acupuncture meridians known for thousands of years. These meridians are pathways for energy flow. The concept of energy flow in the meridians is similar to the flow of blood in the arteries and veins in our circulatory system. Studies done in Germany and at Stanford University verified that there is electrical conduction through the acupuncture meridians, that the energy changes at the traditional acupuncture points, and that the energy changes when health is poor.

Electrodermal Screening Testing the skin surface to determine if there are any imbalances in the energy flow is called electrodermal screening. It is done by touching a small probe to certain points on the hands and feet, which generates information on a computer. A point value on a scale of 0-100 is assigned to the various readings. Scores in the 45-55 range are considered normal. Readings below 45 indicate organ degeneration while scores above 55 suggest organ inflammation. Following the electrodermal screening, therapies are given according to the scores displayed at each of the various test sites.

Magnetic Therapy We are exposed to magnetic energy every day. Some is naturally generated by our body, by solar flares, by changes in the weather, and by the earth itself. Common electrical devices like radios, televisions, computers, microwave ovens, power wheelchairs, and commercial power lines also produce magnetic fields.

Magnetic therapy focuses on the use of external magnets and electromagnetic devices to relieving symptoms and reversing degenerative diseases. The negative poles of the magnets have shown benefits to health while the positive poles exhibit a harmful effect. It has been identified that cancer thrives in a high-acid, low-oxygen environment. Negative magnetic fields cause the cells to become more alkaline and to increase the oxygen level. The technique is called Magnetic Resonance Bio-oxidative Therapy and is still considered experimental even though there are reports of successful treatments of cancers of the prostate, brain, spine, skin and mouth.

Light Therapy Exposure to sunlight plays an important role in maintaining good health. Not only does it help the body produce Vitamin D; the sunlight also sends impulses to our brain’s regulatory system. The brain then generates signals to control everything from sleep cycles and body temperature to digestion and immune function. Because of the body’s need for light, poor lighting or minimal exposure to the sun can lead to health problems. Studies have linked poor lighting to fatigue, hostility, suppressed immune function, depression, hair loss, skin damage, strokes, and cancer.

‘Full-Spectrum Light Therapy’ has shown the ability to help with improving the overall health. Similar to exposure to sunlight, this therapy uses the entire range of light including ultraviolet. A study at Johns Hopkins University Medical School demonstrated a positive relationship between full-spectrum light and the prevention of breast, colon, and rectal cancers.

‘Ultraviolet Light Therapy’ is used both topically for skin lesions and through a process called hemo-irradiation for other cancers. Hemo-irradiation involves removing about a pint of blood, exposing it to ultraviolet light, and returning it to the patient’s bloodstream. This technique has been reported to increase oxygen levels, neutralize body toxins, and balance the body’s biochemicals.

‘Photodynamic Therapy’ or PDT is quite promising in handling some early stage cancers. This therapy involves injecting dyes or medications that are sensitive to light. These agents are absorbed by the cancer tumors which are then exposed to certain types of light. This technique has had a 90% success rate in Japan for the early stage cancers of the lung, stomach, esophagus, and cervix.

I’ve worked as a therapist for about 30 years now, and in that time I’ve seen all kinds of clients with all kinds of issues. I’ve worked with people in abusive relationships – both the abusers and the abused. I’ve worked with drug dependent patients who are constantly struggling with the danger of relapsing. I have worked with many delusional, or even psychotic patients, and once or twice have even been afraid for my life. But for me the most difficult (to say nothing of heartbreaking) patients to work with are those who have been diagnosed with a terminal disease.

When you start looking into alternative medicine, you have probably reached the end of your rope. One of my patients, we will call her Mary, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Everything that she has tried has failed, and the doctors have given her a year or less to live. She has been looking into alternative cancer treatment. Now, for every possible crackpot alternative cancer treatment that you can imagine, there are probably two or three in reality. There is even an organization – I think it is called the alternative cancer treatment instituted or something like that – that is run by all these crackpot schemes to exploit the hope of dying people. There are alternative cancer treatments that involve everything from herbs, to diets, to fasts, to so-called healing touch. There is even an alternative cancer treatment that involves dream interpretation. They claim that if you know the meaning of your dreams, the cancer will go away.

I find all this alternative lung cancer treatment stuff to be revolting. Of course it is good to keep hope with the dying, but all this alternative cancer treatment seems to just exploit them for profit while giving them no real chance of recovery. I guess I have some colleagues that see things quite differently. I know an internist, for example, who believes wholeheartedly in some of the alternative cancer treatments. He believes that more research needs to be done, but he claims that at least one form of herbal alternative cancer treatment offers great hope of recovery in some cases. I don’t know. I hope that he is right, but I think that this is just wishful thinking. The fact is that, as a doctor, he wants to do everything that he can to make sure that his patients do well. Sometimes he has such a strong desire to believe that it compromises his ability to act as a scientist.
