Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Can Cut The Rate Of Cancer
January 31st, 2009 by admin | Filed under Uncategorized. It looks like anti-inflammatory drugs can cut the risk of esophageal cancer. If so this will be a great boon as esophageal cancer is difficult to spot and diagnose and by the time it is detected the outlook is relatively poor.
Studies show that anti-inflammatory drugs [non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs -NSAIDs] could more than halve the risk of aggressive cases of Barrett’s esophagus progressing to esophageal cancer. This is research that took place in the United States. This disease - Barrett’s esophagus - is well known to lead to malignancy but luckily there is a surveillance program. If the research can be ratified then it could, possibly, be the case that further studies in NSAID use might help other esophageal malignancies?
Barrett’s esophagus is a genetic condition, but it appears that using NSAIDs in these patients can cut the risk of cancer significantly. 243 patients with Barrett’s esophagus whose average age was 62 were assessed for the genetic abnormality and the use of these anti-inflammatory drugs. The studies showed that there is a statistically significant change because of the NSAID use. Clearly further work is needed.
For non-users of anti-inflammatory drugs, the increased rate of esophageal cancer was 78 percent. It looks as though these NSAID drugs can inhibit a chemical in the body which predisposes to abnormal cells in the esophageal area. NSAIDs are very readily available, cheap, and easy to use and they may help sufferers of Barrett’s esophagus. Consideration must also be given to the long term potential harmful effects of these drugs.
