7 Stages of Cancer Development

December 4th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

You must have heard of this statistic that out of every 3 of us, one of us will get cancer. But do you know that back in 1901, only 1 in 8,000 got cancer? Our body actually tries in so many ways to give us all the warnings and symptoms to tell us that something is not right and we need to do something about it!

Let us see from the Holistic Health Science point of view how cancer develops in 7 stages.

First stage, Enervation.
It is not recognized as a disease yet. Most people will just feel tired, exhausted and worn-out at this stage. The best way to recover from enervation is to get enough sleep as sleep is the greatest energy charger! Inadequate sleep and rest are the main causes of enervation.

Second stage, Toxemia or intoxication.
Toxemia is a state where toxins saturate our body. This happens when we fail to observe our capacities and ignore the symptoms of enervation. We continue to overwork, sleep late and are under great stress.

Third stage, Irritation is when we feel itchy and uncomfortable, or when we have irritating but not painful areas.
Irritation results from toxic substances being sensed by our nervous system. Our body is giving us signal to move away from this condition.

Fourth stage, Inflammation.
It’s only at this stage that doctors recognize it as disease as it involves pain. Maybe you’ve experienced this before: you completely lost your appetite; and you don’t feel hungry at all even you’ve not been eating for the whole day, all you want to do is just to sleep and rest! Sounds familiar? The area becomes inflamed due to the continuous irritation of toxic substances. Appendicitis (appendix), tonsillitis (tonsils), hepatitis (liver) and nephritis (kidney) are all inflammation but in different areas.

Fifth stage, Ulceration.
Our body use ulcer as a way to drain toxic built-up, it will heal if causes are stopped. Cells and tissue structures are being damaged due to our body’s inability to live in increasing toxin.

Sixth stage, Induration, or often called tumor formation.
Induration is the process where our tissue hardened so that ulcer and toxic materials can be kept inside and sealed off by the hardening of the tissue around them. This is a way of quarantining the toxins. This shows how our body tries so hard to protect us even at this stage! However, if we continue with our destructive lifestyles and diet patterns, our body will eventually dissolve the hard tissue when the toxin level is so high and it can no loner take it! This means the toxins will leak and circulate to other parts of the body, and that leads to cancer…

Final stage, Cancer.
Our cells have become parasitic at this stage. Cancer is usually fatal, it can ONLY be reversible with the condition of us stopping the causes and indulge in healthful practices, as healthful practices are the universal panacea!

Siew Yin Gark’s philosophy has always been that there are no quick fixes to staying healthy. She believes that we can attain health only through proper diet, exercise, sleep and rest and the results will be long term. Understanding Cancer Therapies - A Patient’s Guide

December 4th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

There are many different types of cancer therapies. Some are well established and some more experimental. Some have proven to be useful only in certain cancers and not in others.

If you embark on the path of researching cancer treatments, you’ll become very familiar very quickly with the treatments being used for the particular cancer you’re researching.

This article is just a basic introduction of various cancer therapies. Before you ultimately decide on a particular form of therapy you’ll need to investigate it thoroughly.

You’ll need to know the cure rate, the side effects, how long you’ll be incapacitated, etc.

But here is a very basic introduction:

The most well-known cancer therapies are:

1. Surgery;
2. Chemotherapy;
3. Radiation Therapy.

Often the standard treatment for a cancer is a combination of various therapies. For example, the standard treatment might be surgery followed by or surgery followed by radiation therapy:

Surgery is the removal of tissue by physical means such as taking out a cancerous lung or removing a cancerous prostate;

Chemotherapy is a type of drug which kills cells. The principle is to give toxic substances which kill cells and hopefully will kill the fastest growing cells (the cancer cells) at a higher rate than the regular body cells;

Radiation Therapy is the killing of cancerous cells using ionizing radiation. This radiation can either be given internally or, more commonly, externally.

But there are many other types of cancer treatments. For example:

Hormonal therapy in which medication is given to block or enhance the effect of the body’s own hormones;

Anti-angiogenesis therapy in which drugs are given to inhibit the growth of blood vessels which are the lifeline of all cancers;

Biological therapy (also known as immunotherapy, biotherapy, or biological response modifier therapy). This type of therapy attempts to use the body’s own immune system to fight cancer. A number of different treatments fall into this category including interferons, interleukins, colony stimulating factors, monoclonal antibodies, vaccine therapy, and gene therapy;

Laser therapy in which high-intensity light is used to shrink or destroy tumors. Lasers are most commonly used to treat superficial cancers (cancers on the surface of the body or the lining of internal organs);

Hyperthermia is a type of in which body tissue is exposed to high temperatures (up to 113°F) to damage and kill cancer cells;

Photodynamic therapy is a treatment that uses a drug, called a photosensitizer or photosensitizing agent, and a particular type of light. When photosensitizers are exposed to a specific wavelength of light, they produce a form of oxygen that kills nearby cells;

Targeted cancer therapies use drugs that block the growth and spread of cancer. They interfere with specific molecules involved in carcinogenesis (the process by which normal cells become cancer cells) and tumor growth;

Cryosurgery (also called cryotherapy) is the use of extreme cold produced by liquid nitrogen (or argon gas) to destroy abnormal tissue.

Hopefully this list will be useful to you when you come across unexpected terms.

Radon Linked With Cancer: How to Ensure Your Home is Radon-Free

December 4th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Radon is responsible for at least 15,000 to 20,000 getting deaths each year in the U.S. In fact, radon exposure is the second-leading cause of in the United States. This tragedy is compounded by the fact that both radon testing and radon mitigation are simple and inexpensive. While nationally 1 in 15 homes may show dangerous levels of radon, the average levels in many parts of the mid-Atlantic may be two to three times higher than this. There are no immediate symptoms of radon exposure and you cannot see, taste, feel, or smell radon. Cancer can show up five to 25 years after exposure and about 12% of diagnoses are caused by radon.

Where Radon Comes From

Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the soil. It is a byproduct of uranium decay. Radon can be found in-new homes, older homes, homes in need of repair, homes without basements; there is no pattern. Your neighbor’s home might be radon-free, while your home has dangerous levels. Radon can come from the ground beneath a home, well water, and various building materials. The only way to know is to test your home, which can be done for less than $30 with a simple kit available at most hardware stores.

Before Buying a Home:

Ask the seller for a copy of the home’s radon test results. If the home has not been tested, ask your home inspector to include a radon test in his report.Make sure that the Radon Testing Checklist items were met. Make sure that the last test was recent, at least within the past 2 years.Make sure that the seller has performed the test in the lowest, livable level of the house. This usually means the basement, but if the home has no basement, test in the lowest level of the house.Ask that the home be tested again if any changes have been made to the home’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system since the last test was done.Should you decide to renovate an unfinished part of the home, test for radon before work begins. It is much easier to install a radon system in an unfinished room. If your test results are close to the EPA action level (4.0 pCi/l), test the space again after work is completed. When renovating an unfinished part of a home or building a new home, look to minimize radon presence.

To Minimize Radon When Building a New Home:

The integrity of the slab should be maintained at all times.Sump pits need to be installed with a sealed cover. Use a gas tight radon drain for all floor drains.When framing, run a radon vent pipe from the basement to the high part of the attic. This pipe should not be to close to the attic eaves, so that a radon fan can be easily added at a later date if needed.If a sump pump is not required for the basement or if the construction is slab on grade, have drain tile looped around the perimeter of the inside of the foundation and have it terminate with a 3 inch PVC “rough in.” A 3″ PVC vent pipe is sufficient for spaces that are less than 2,000 square feet. Use a 4″ PVC “rough in” and a 4″ PVC vent pipe for spaces larger than 2,000 square feet. How to Measure Radon

Homeowners can test for radon themselves. Order a radon test kit and when finished, make sure to return the radon test to the laboratory with all the required information filled out. Be sure to follow the test kit instructions to the letter. One of the most common mistakes is over or under exposing the devices. A radon test result of 4 picocuries (a picocurie is one trillionth of a curie and measures radioactivity) per liter or higher is considered to be a high radon level. The average radon level in homes is 1.3pCi/L and .4pCi/L outdoors. The 1.3 pCi/l national average includes homes in many regions that do not have radon issues. Keep in mind that the 4.0 pCi/l standard was established as a matter of practicality, not safety. EPA officials at the time were unsure whether the technology and methods employed in 1984 were capable of reducing radon levels further. Recent studies show a significant risk of when exposed at levels between 2 and 4 pCi/l. EPA recommends reducing radon levels to below 2pCi/l if possible.

If your home does have Radon

Costs to hire a radon removal professional to lower radon levels average about $800 to $1,200. Homes with crawl spaces or without gravel under the slab cost more. Many radon removal configurations exist and include sub slab depressurization (SSD), SSD with a crawl space, and air exchangers. The work required for a successful radon mitigation are beyond the skills of most untrained homeowners.

What to Consider When Hiring a Radon Abatement or Mitigation Firm

Ask to see proof of their certifications from National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) and/or the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB).Contractors must also be licensed as home-improvement contactors in each state they wish to work. The District of Columbia is an exception in the case of radon work.Make sure the contractor is fully insured.Have them describe all of the work they will be doing.Sign a contract and see that it includes all promises that were made verbally.Don’t pay for work until it is complete. Down payments are rarely required.Ask for at least a 20-year transferable warranty.

Cancer and Green Tea - Sorting Through The Evidence

December 4th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

By now most of us have heard that green tea may have tremendous potential in terms of helping us win the war against cancer. There have been many studies that have shown that green tea has been shown to prevent the development of cancer when it is a significant part of your diet. In addition, there have even been studies that have shown that green tea may even have potential for treating cancer.

But, then occasionally you’ll find a study that makes it sound as though green tea may actually have some negative effects on our health. So, it can be easy to get confused as to whether we really should be adding green tea to our diets for health benefits or not.

Here are a few things that are known for sure.

Anti-oxidants are good for us. They combat the free radicals that are created in our bodies as we process food. When our diet is low in anti-oxidants the free radicals damage our cells and our DNA. Over time this leads to aging and disease.

Tea contains EGCG and polyphenols. These are two of the most potent forms of anti-oxidants, making tea, particularly green tea, because of its lack of fermentation, rich in the substance that protect us from aging and disease.

There are no known side effects to drinking green tea. Green tea is lower in caffeine that coffee or black tea, so it’s a good beverage choice for those who must watch their intake of caffeine. And, it’s completely natural. A simple cup of tea will have no additives, preservatives or processed substances.

Asian cultures drink a large amount of green tea and have a significantly lower than incidence of cancer, heart disease and stroke. Of course, there may be other factors in the Asian lifestyle that affect their lower incidence of disease. However, there are some statistics that are startling. For instance, nearly 75% of all Japanese men smoke, yet their risk of and heart disease is significantly lower than that of American men.

It’s true that we still need additional research on humans to gain more conclusive evidence about green tea and its potential in preventing or treating cancer.

Many of the studies that have been conducted have been on mice. Human research takes years of follow up to be conclusive and is more difficult than laboratory research. And, there are many more factors that must be considered during human studies, such as habits and genetics.

One interesting discussion of the studies that have been performed on green tea and their results, both positive and negative, is in the National Library of Medicine. This publication gave an overview of several studies done on green tea and cancer. The breakdown looks like this.

In 5 studies on , three concluded that it might , one concluded that green tea might contribute to cancer.

In 4 studies on rectal cancer, one reported that green tea could , but two showed that it might actually contribute to developing the disease.

In 10 studies on stomach cancer, 6 suggested that green tea might and 3 suggested that it might contribute to cancer. The most comprehensive study on stomach cancer reported that green tea is an effective preventer of cancer.

Nearly all studies on pancreatic and esophageal cancer suggest that green tea has a preventative effect, and most studies have shown positive results, though there has been at least one study that reported and increased risk associated with green tea.

So, as with many other health research concerns, there is still much work that needs to be done. And, there have been a few studies that have shown a possibility that green tea might actually increase your risk of cancer. However, when you take the research as a whole, it seems probable that you’re better off drinking green tea than avoiding it.

As research continues, we’ll learn more definitive information about the level of protection that green tea can provide, and just exactly how it provides this protection. As we learn more, we’ll be better able to determine how much tea you really need to drink and on which cancers it seems to be most effective.

In spite of the few studies that have shown some negative results, overall researchers believe that green tea shows great promise in the area of and treatment. For centuries, Asians have used green tea to prevent and treat all kinds of illnesses, even before there was scientific research to support it.

In the mean time, there seems to be no reason to avoid green tea. It’s refreshing, has no side effects and can be a great way to lower your intake of caffeine. Keep your eyes out for the new research findings as they emerge – it’s sure to be exciting to find out all the potential that lies in green tea.
