Alternative Cancer Treatments

September 5th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

I’ve worked as a therapist for about 30 years now, and in that time I’ve seen all kinds of clients with all kinds of issues. I’ve worked with people in abusive relationships – both the abusers and the abused. I’ve worked with drug dependent patients who are constantly struggling with the danger of relapsing. I have worked with many delusional, or even psychotic patients, and once or twice have even been afraid for my life. But for me the most difficult (to say nothing of heartbreaking) patients to work with are those who have been diagnosed with a terminal disease.

When you start looking into alternative medicine, you have probably reached the end of your rope. One of my patients, we will call her Mary, has been diagnosed with . Everything that she has tried has failed, and the doctors have given her a year or less to live. She has been looking into alternative . Now, for every possible crackpot alternative that you can imagine, there are probably two or three in reality. There is even an organization – I think it is called the alternative instituted or something like that – that is run by all these crackpot schemes to exploit the hope of dying people. There are alternative cancer treatments that involve everything from herbs, to diets, to fasts, to so-called touch. There is even an alternative that involves dream interpretation. They claim that if you know the meaning of your dreams, the cancer will go away.

I find all this alternative lung stuff to be revolting. Of course it is good to keep hope with the dying, but all this alternative seems to just exploit them for profit while giving them no real chance of recovery. I guess I have some colleagues that see things quite differently. I know an internist, for example, who believes wholeheartedly in some of the alternative cancer treatments. He believes that more research needs to be done, but he claims that at least one form of herbal alternative offers great hope of recovery in some cases. I don’t know. I hope that he is right, but I think that this is just wishful thinking. The fact is that, as a doctor, he wants to do everything that he can to make sure that his patients do well. Sometimes he has such a strong desire to believe that it compromises his ability to act as a scientist.

Alternative Colon Cleansing

September 5th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Colon cleansing generally speaking involves the detoxification of the body’s system. Although there are no definite methods for colon cleansing, one can come across literally hundreds of alternative colon cleansing methods. With increasing pollution, these alternate colon-cleansing methods offer remedies to prevent many bowel related diseases.

Enema detoxification is a popular and natural way of detoxifying the body. In this method, organic and a fully caffeinated brew of coffee is used. The detoxification can be done in the convenience of one’s home. Foot detox is another method that is being used for colon cleansing. This method involves placing one’s feet in a basin of salted water that contains ion generators. The ion generator is supplied with a low current of electricity. The generation of current produces oppositely charged ions that attract opposite charged particles in the body. The entire method works by getting rid of charged toxins in the body that are usually in the form of metals.

Saunas and spas are another effective alternative colon cleansing method. They have been in existence for centuries and are perhaps the oldest methods of detoxification. The heat generated within the body in saunas or spas causes the body to sweat intensely. During this process several toxins are eliminated from the body. There are also several herbal methods like the lymphatic therapy that helps the entire body system drain its contents. The “Chelation” therapy involves the use of substances that actually bind with the toxic metals in the body and then form a kind of salt. These salts are then easily eliminated. You will also find several oriental systems of medicine, from China and India that have alternative colon cleansing methods.

Da Vinci Robot: Best Choice For Prostate Surgery?

September 5th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common non- in men - about 30 percent of all cancers are prostate and 15 percent of men are likely to get it.

Radical prostatectomy has the highest cure rate for an organ-confined disease of all treatments although 10-20 percent have additional prostatic disease after pathologic evaluation.

Traditionally, surgery has been done “open” (retropubic or perineal), but since 1997 the laparoscopic approach has gained acceptance. Around 2001, the robotic approach started to become idealized. By 2005, about 20 percent of radical prostatectomies were performed with the da Vinci™ surgical system from Intuitive Surgical. Although the da Vinci robot was named after Leonardo da Vinci, who made the first robot, the term was coined by Capek in a Czech play in 1921. Technically, the da Vinci™ Surgical System is not technically a robot, it’s a “remote computer assisted tele-manipulator.”

Robotic prostate surgery has some advantages for the patient. During surgery, patients tend to lose less blood, require fewer transfusions (1-2 percent instead of 5-10) and have shorter catheterization times. The latter can mean less infection, less urinary extravasation and a faster return to continence for patients. Patients also suffer less post-op pain because of a shorter incision, which helps them resume normal activities more quickly (within 92 hours instead of 4 weeks) as well as a shorter hospital stays (1.2 days instead of 2.5).

Still, controversy exists about the advantages, disadvantages and cost-effectiveness of the robot. All approaches (open, laparoscopic or robotic) provide similar overall health and quality of life outcomes: positive margins (2-19 percent); Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) recurrence free survival (80-95 percent after 3 years); continence at one year (80-95 percent); potency at one year (55-85 percent); and overall complications (5-10 percent). They are also similar in cost, so doctors select one approach over another based upon the patient situation and achieve similar results.
