Lymphoma: Who is Susceptible?

Lymphoma, as with virtually every other form of cancer, can strike anybody at any time during their life however some groups are more susceptible to the disease than others. Studies around the world have shown that age, gender and geographical location affect whether you have a high or low risk of developing however there are always exceptions to these suggestions.

Age

Lymphoma is generally regarded as a disease of the elderly and this is true to a certain extent. There are many more cases reported in the over 60s than in the under 60s however this isn’t the only age group that are thought to be at risk. People over the age of 60 often have weaker immune systems than their younger counterparts and so when mutations occur in the DNA of certain cells the body cannot eradicate these defective cells and they go on to multiply and form a cancerous growth. Strong immune systems kill mutated cells before they have the chance to multiply and differentiate which means that younger people are less susceptible to .

Unfortunately it would seem that 25-35 year olds also show a marked increase with regards to number of diagnosed cases however researchers are still trying to figure out why this is so.

Gender

Studies have shown that men are about three times more likely to suffer from than women. Again research is continuing into why this is so however scientists think that female hormones may play a protective role with regards to development or alternatively that male hormones make the gender more prone to the disease. As people age the two genders levels out and the probability of a male developing is only slightly higher than that of a female developing the disease. This confirms that hormone levels may in fact influence whether a person is susceptible to the disease or not.

Geographical location

It would seem that people living in highly developed countries such as the UK, America, Australia, Germany etc. are at a much higher risk of being diagnosed with than those living in places like Africa and Asia. This may have a lot to do with lifestyle and environment i.e. rich fatty foods, air pollution and other carcinogenic agents may decrease a person’s resistance to DNA mutations, however it may also be due to other factors such as natural immunity and the use of prescription drugs. Again nobody knows for sure and more research is still needed.

Even though certain age groups and people in some geographical locations are more susceptible to than others, this doesn’t mean that you are exempt from developing the disease if you don’t fall into these categories. Children as young as two years old have been diagnosed with the disease, and so it is obvious that nobody is one hundred percent safe from . You should make a point of checking your lymph glands regularly for any signs of swelling and in addition you should definitely consult the doctor should you feel anything wrong.

Regular exercise is believed to delay the beginning of a girl’s first menstrual period. That is when the body creates hormones that stimulate the majority of breast cancers. According to a study, just 4 hours of weekly exercise can postpone hormone surges for up to 12 months.

Four hours a week is not a large amount of activity for a girl. She can play dodge ball, play on the playground or ride her bike. Because exercise can lower hormone activity, it can reduce risk of , even after a girl starts having periods.

One more way is cutting back on fat. Girl who cut her fat intake by only 6 percent lowered her estrogen and progesterone levels by at least 30 percent, according to a study. These theories are not really well tested and need more research.

How To Restart or Boost Your Body’s Own Built-in Cancer Fighting Machine

As you may know, cancer is second only to heart disease in mortality. An amazing one-third of Americans will eventually die due to some form of cancer (although the information I will share with you literally has the power to change that statistic.)

Ironically, many cancers can be prevented by maintaining a good diet, avoiding carcinogens and reinforcing the immune system.

Once a cancer has established itself, however, more firepower is needed to fight it off. What most people don’t know is that our bodies, in fact every cell of our body, is equipped with the ability to fight cancer.

Just a little more background before we get to that…

The most common forms of cancer are for men and for women. Next is bladder and cancer for men and uterine and for women.

Why does it happen?

Well, first we need to understand what happens.

In simple terms, healthy cells only allow normal cellular replication. Unhealthy cells lose control of the replication process and form a clump of growing cancerous tissue.

This clump (called a tumor), if left unchecked, can expand and crowd out normal tissue. As the process advances, the clump breaks into smaller pieces that travel to other parts of the body and repeat this damaging process of uncontrolled replication.

This is, of course, called cancer.

Symptoms begin to appear once this clump begins to interfere with bodily functions or depletes energy resources.

So, to put it simply, cancer happens due to unhealthy cells.

Thus, what we really need to know is: What causes a cell to be unhealthy?

Good question…We have billions of cells and it seems like it would be impossible for everyone of them to stay healthy. That is absolutely true. In fact, cells have a life cycle, they come and go, they start out healthy and then eventually get old and die.

So why doesn’t everyone have cancer?

The truth is, they do.

What! Everyone has cancer? Yes, in the sense that we all have cells in our body which have become unhealthy, some due to natural decline and genetic predisposition, but others due to the effect of the stresses our bodies absorb on a daily basis. Some of these cells then lose their ability to replicate properly and begin to show signs of cancer.

The point is, if you keep the majority of your cells healthy, you will have a healthy immune system and a relatively “clean” body (think: detoxification) which can quickly and naturally attack and eliminate cancerous cells from your body.

In a healthy body, this “cancer fighting machine” is at work 24/7. But in an unhealthy body, it is as if our “cancer fighting machine” stalls and just can’t keep up, giving the cancerous cells time to take root and potentially take over.

In fact, when our body gets behind, when our immune system is not responding quickly, when our body is being overwhelmed by unhealthy cells, we manifest this in a way most of us are familiar with—it is called uncontrolled inflammation.

Most of us have felt the effects of inflammation. The achy, painful to the touch, often swollen tissue that is the result of some sort of injury or insult to the body.

We sometimes notice inflammation when it is working properly, a bruise or sprain. However, uncontrolled inflammation is different.

The constant physical and even emotional stress we all endure leads to an inflammation response that is not balanced and which wreaks havoc on our bodies.

Countless scientific journals point to uncontrolled inflammation, “oxidative stress” or “free radicals” as the common denominator in most major disease states and one of the more prominent causes of cancer.

Our cells are maxed out. The physical stresses we encounter overwhelm the natural systems that are supposed to keep us balanced. Physical Therapists Help Breast Cancer Survivors Benefit From Exercise After The Walk And Awareness

What can we do after walking and raising awareness for Breast Cancer? Promote exercise everywhere you go and with everyone you meet, especially among Breast Cancer survivors. Did you know even Breast Cancer survivors benefit from exercise?

October was Breast Cancer awareness month and Physical Therapy awareness month. What better way to celebrate and raise awareness by continuing to give the gift of fitness to survivors by working with one group of professionals best trained to work with them, physical therapists, and by encouraging everyone you love to make fitness a regular part of their daily lives.

Everyone knows of someone affected by Breast cancer. Over 271,420 new cases of Breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in 2005. Breast cancer survivors have very special needs requiring a skilled professional at least until they reach a maintenance phase in exercise programming.

Once their physician provides a medical clearance exercise a woman can begin exercising. Exercise programs provide flexibility exercises for the affected arm and improve postural alignment and awareness after surgery.

Some of the exercise benefits of participating in a regular exercise program for Breast Cancer survivors are:
- increased quality of life
- increased mood
- increased strength and endurance
- prevention of complications after surgery and treatment

Exercise helps to battle the side effects of treatment and aid in Breast Cancer recovery. Additional benefits of exercise include improvements in function and pain perception and all psychological areas according to the latest research. Exercise will help with daily activities and prevent further weakness and musculoskeletal problems.

Once full range of motion or mobility are restored strength training for the affected arm can begin. While working towards full range of motion, continue strengthening those body parts that are not affected. You’ll need the strength in the rest of your body to be functional and efficient with your daily activities. Some women on hormonal therapy are at risk for developing osteoporosis. Weightbearing exercise can help offset any possible fractures.

Physical activity is still possible even with lymphedema, a chronic swelling of the affected arm when lymphatic fluid collects and is unable to drain properly. Close supervision by a Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist is a good idea to receive proper guidance for exercise selection and instruction. Not only can strengthening occur but the therapist can assist in developing alternate routes for lymphatic fluid drainage to prevent the likelihood of developing lymph edema. Therapists can also show you how to monitor your arm if you are prone to developing lymphedema. The risk of lymphedema is also decreased by participation in a supervised exercise program. Physical therapists are well trained and qualified to provide evidence-based, supervised and individualized exercise programs for willing survivors. An integrative and complete exercise program will focus on strength and flexibility of the shoulder, arm, back and hand in addition to posture, aerobic endurance, lower body training and stress reduction.

Exercises for core strengthening and stabilization are another way to improve function and strength. Proper postural retraining is very important as changes tend to occur following surgery which if left unaddressed can lead to the development of other problems.

Deep breathing techniques will assist with controlling and returning lymphatic fluid back to the heart By practicing deep and efficient breathing techniques, postural alignment will be improved and stress can be reduced.

Flexibility exercises will increase range of motion where limitations exist not only in the upper body but in the back as well. A flexibility program will also address any scar tissue that may have developed following surgery.

If exhaustion and fatigue are a factor, participating in appropriate exercises throughout the course of the day as opposed to a continuous exercise session may be more tolerable. Cardiovascular or aerobic exercise will boost your endurance. Try something simple and safe initially like walking.

Learn how to use and incorporate the use of your affected arm in your daily activities. This is a great way to functionally work on flexibility and strength.

Remember we can all do something active and encourage those around us to do the same. Exercise is an inclusive activity that we all can benefit from with proper guidance. So don’t wait for a special month or a problem to enlist the help of a physical therapist. Partner up and start moving today to feel your power - all year long!
