Cancer: Chemotherapy — Do Unto Others As You Would Want Them Do Unto You!

June 3rd, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

At the First World Congress on Cancer held in 1994 in Sydney, Australia, Dr. Ernesto Contreras, told the congress participants of an incident in which his good friend, a lung specialist, came to see him one day in his office. The excerpt of the conversations went as below:

Lung specialist: Ernesto, I am scared. I have been a heavy smoker and I have a shadow in my lung. I come to you, even though I don’t believe in what you do … Let’s make this clear from the beginning. If you find I have cancer, I don’t want to take any of the medications I use for cancer, because they don’t work.

Dr. Contreras: Why do you prescribe them to your patients?

Lung specialist: Because I am different!

Dr. Contreras: Why are you different from your patients?

Lung specialist: I won’t take the medications but I will prescribe them!

In a survey conducted among 118 doctors in the US, it was found that doctors would not use chemo-drugs on themselves, if they had cancer (Journal of Oncology, Nov. 1987). Why is this so?

For your information, I and my own family members also take the herbs that are being prescribed to cancer patients. I sometimes took Capsule A herbs, Pain tea and LL-tea, my wife took Capsule A, Utero-ovary tea, Stomach Function tea and PMS capsules. My daughter Irene took Capsule A for her juvenile migraine. Albert, our youngest son took Capsule A for sinus problems and has been taking Lung Tea herbs for his asthma. My sister-in laws was on Menopause capsule, Pain tea, etc. This just goes to show that I have that much confidence in my herbs. All these herbs mentioned above are being prescribed to my cancer patients as well.

I wonder, if any doctor would dare bring home antibiotics, steroids, chemo-drugs, etc., and give them to his family members!

One doctor friend once told me: As a doctor, I am obliged to ask people to go for , radiotherapy, etc. But as a friend and acting on my own personal basis, I would not ask my relatives to go through them! So, he bought some herbs for his aunt’s cancer! Such an attitude is very understandable. Any doctor who dares to go against the establishment or perceived norms would be made an outcast and labeled a quack.

Since my school days I had this ingrained into my head: Do unto others as you would have them done unto you. In my childhood days, I also learnt this from the village bully: Heads I win, tails you lose!

Unfortunately, this is the reality of how the world operates.

Prostate Cancer Treatment

June 3rd, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Prostate cancer has become the stumbling block among American men to enjoying a quality life. Almost all of these men who have retired from their work wanted to relish the fruit of their labor for so many years, however their desire to make the most of their remaining years and their pension has been set aside because many of them if not all suffer from .

Prostate cancer is caused when abnormal cells begin to attack the prostate and other tissue near it. The abnormal cell in due time will form a mass or tumor. The type of tumor that can badly affect the prostate is the malignant. When malignant cells manifest in the prostate region, the affected man will begin to feel the symptoms of the disease.

The symptoms common among men who are living with are unusual urge to frequently urinate, trouble in making the first stream of urine, burning sensation, and painful urination. Other symptoms include pain at the pelvic area down to the lower back but not beyond the upper thighs, presence of blood in urine and semen.

When a patient is diagnosed to be positive of cancer through a combination of tests like digital rectal exam, prostate-specific antigen test, and transurethral ultrasound, the doctor may present to the patient the different treatments.

Speaking of treatment, cryotherapy will surely be in the list. Cryotherapy is a medical procedure that uses cryogenic substance in inhibiting cancer cells from developing. The process uses a needle inserted to the perineum (the skin that connects the anus and the scrotum). The needle is attached to a machine containing cryogenic substance. Once the needle is inserted, tiny ice balls will be released to the prostate, thus freezing the cancer cells and the prostate.

Another is brachytherapy. This procedure utilizes seed implants that can emit radioactive rays. These seed implants that have the same size of rice grains are implanted to the prostate using a special needle that will contain the seeds. The needle is inserted in the same way with cryotherapy. The doctor will insert a finger to the rectum to feel the prostate and make sure that the seed implants are placed properly and securely. This method works in the same way as radiotherapy, in this case the radiation is coming from within.

Radical prostatectomy is considered a major surgery in prostrate treatment. The aim of the procedure is to remove the prostate to avoid further damage to other organs proximate to the prostate.

Prostate cancer can be costly. A patient can choose any of the treatments available considering his age, financial capability, risks, and benefits of a chosen treatment.

Mesothelioma Treatment Is Certainly An Aid To The Ailment

June 3rd, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Description of

Mesothelioma is mainly caused due to contact with asbestos, which has zeolite. When inhaled, the asbestos fibers reach the pleural layer of our lungs and damages the mesothelial cells. When consumed, the asbestos fibers get to our abdominal cavity and cause peritoneal that can spread to the other parts of the body.

However, it takes the disease 20 to 50 years to attain a full shape and by then the average life of that person shrinks.

Mesothelioma treatment

The determining factors that needs to be taken into account before the commencement of the treatment are:

- The site of the cancer

- The stage of the disease

- The patient’s physical condition

The usual types of treatment for are surgery, radiation therapy and . However, often a combination of these treatments is also used.

The primary steps

As the symptoms do not surface during the incubation period of the disease, it is a hindrance to the medical peoples in their diagnosis. The tests, prior to surgery, that are done regarding treatment are:

- Blood test to check the level of blood cells

- A CT or MRI scan to see the area the cancer had extended

- A lungs test to calculate the pumping power of the lungs

- A lung’s perfusion test to check the flow of blood to the lungs

- An Echocardiogram to see if the cancer had reached the heart

Surgery

A good doctor-patient relationship really helps the patient to remove the fear of operation, which is to be undergone with an empty stomach, followed by TED stockings and a good anesthesia.

An intravenous infusion, a drainage tube, an oxygen mask and few similar devices form the postoperative treatment.

A chest drain tube helps the damaged lungs to pump in air after the removal of pleura. Pain that starts due to the of the damaged nerve cells is somewhat subdued via painkillers.

To end with, breathing and chest exercises come under treatment that accelerate the recovery.

Chemotherapy as treatment

It involves a variety of medications that are used to kill the cancerous cells. Chemotherapy is often administered along with radiation therapy and is considered an effective treatment.

Side effects of Chemotherapy

The side effects of are the decrease in red and white blood cells and platelets leading to anemia, loss of immunity, nausea. Bone marrow along with the cells of stomach, hair, skin and mouth suffer from . However, drugs called growth factors are prescribed that aids to get rid of the above side effects to a great extent.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy, the emitting of high-energy rays to damage the DNA of the cancerous cells, both externally and internally, is a practical treatment relieving the patients from this fretfully fatal disease. It can be applied to reduce the tumor before operating and can even go along Chemotherapy.

The radiating rays destroy the damaged cells along with normal cells; but radiation therapy offers more than it takes.

However, you should seek the guidance of radiation oncologist who has a better understanding of the therapeutic process. It is costly and at the same time a powerful treatment.

New age ushers new kinds of treatments

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) via various clinical tests and trials are trying to achieve a better solution that reflects new lights regarding treatments.

- Gene therapy involves the replacement of the living cells of the patient’s body by injecting a customized gene that fights the disease by providing a fresh supply of cells.

- Immunotherapy is the process of exciting your own immune system so that it fight backs the disease from the inside.

- Photodynamic Therapy unites a photosensitizing means with a light source reacting with oxygen, releasing certain chemicals to obliterate the cells.

Remember that treatment can show the frustrated and lonely man a new vista of existence. All types of cancer are life threatening and about 2000 Americans are diagnosed with it each year.

If you are reading this and you have a history of asbestos exposure, the next thing is to get an appointment with a medical practitioner.

A Refreshing Way to Fight Cancer

June 3rd, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

(This article first appeared in Health Today magazine - healthtoday.net)

Lowering your has never been this refreshing. More and more studies suggest that tea, tomato juice, carrot juice, red wine and soymilk contain compounds that can fight certain types of cancer.

TEA TIME
Tea contains polyphenols, which are natural plant antioxidants. Antioxidants have been shown to prevent free radical damage to DNA and other molecules. Polyphenols may by reducing abnormal cell growth and inflammation.

Green tea is very rich in polyphenols and has been associated with protection against , stomach cancer, and its pre-cancerous condition, gastritis. A study in Japan found that regular consumption of green tea (more than three cups a day) might protect the body against recurrence of early-stage .

Laboratory animals given different tea extracts, tea polyphenol mixtures, purified tea components and tea infusions exhibited lower incidence rates of cancer of the colon, esophagus, liver, stomach, lung, breast, pancreas and skin.

YOU’LL LIKE LYCOPENE
Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a natural pigment that gives tomatoes their red color. Lycopene has potent antioxidant properties, and is believed to be the key to the tomato’s cancer-fighting powers.

Research shows that lycopene in tomatoes is absorbed more efficiently by the body if processed into juice, sauce, paste and ketchup. Temperature changes in the processing of tomatoes convert lycopene into a more absorbable form.

In the body, lycopene is deposited in the liver, lungs, prostate gland, colon and skin. Its concentration in body tissues tends to be higher than all other carotenoids, a class of natural fat-soluble pigments that give veggies and fruits their various hues (orange, red and yellow).

Studies have shown that people with a high intake of tomatoes or a high serum level of lycopene have a significantly lower risk of certain types of cancer, like prostate, lung and stomach cancers.

There is also evidence suggesting a lowered risk for cancers of the pancreas, colon and rectum, esophagus, oral cavity, breast and cervix.

In a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (March 2002), researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) found that eating tomatoes and tomato products may help men reduce their risk of . Men with higher levels of lycopene in their blood had statistically significant lower rates of cancer than did men with lower blood levels of lycopene.

“Previous studies have shown a relationship between tomato consumption and risk of cancer,” according to study lead author Edward Giovannucci, M.D., Sc.D. of BWH and HSPH. “This study, in which we carefully examined the full diet of study participants, provides us further evidence that increased consumption of tomatoes is associated with a lower risk of .”

WHAT’S UP, DOC?
Carrot contains the pigment beta carotene. Beta carotene has powerful antioxidant properties and can be converted to vitamin A. Both beta carotene and vitamin A are rich sources of antioxidants.

If you’re an urban dweller, regular consumption of carrot juice may be good for you. Some studies show that carrots protect the lungs from environmental pollutants. Carrot juice is also recommended for those living in polluted cities or those whose work exposes them to toxic fumes (e.g., metal workers, those handling chemicals, cleaners, etc.) as well as smokers and those exposed to secondhand smoke.

A word of caution, though: Excessive intake of beta carotene can turn the skin and whites of the eyes to an orange-yellow color.

CHEERS TO GOOD HEALTH
Red wine contains a strong anticancer agent known as quercetin, a flavonoid found in fruits, flowers and vegetables. Flavonoids have antioxidant properties that help protect against disease, inflammation and allergic reactions.

Quercetin may be beneficial in the treatment of and may help prevent other cancers such as those of the ovary. Red wine is one of the primary dietary sources of quercetin. Research on quercetin and its purported health benefits continues.

Remember: Drink moderately.

SOY GOOD
Soy comes from soybean, a legume native to China. The health benefits of soy come, in part, from a group of compounds known as isoflavones. Soy isoflavones are plant estrogens (phytoestrogens). Similar in chemical structure to human estrogen, they bind to estrogen receptors around the body. However, soy phytoestrogens are much weaker, which is why scientists believe soy foods may help prevent . One prominent isoflavone is genistein, which is believed to inhibit cancer cell and tumor growth.

A diet rich in soy is also linked to a lowered risk of .

Several animal studies have shown that soy isoflavones reduce the growth of prostate tumors.

To incorporate more soy into your diet, substitute soymilk for cow’s milk by the glass (8 ounces of soy milk contains 20 mg of isoflavones) or mix soy protein power into milk, juices, shakes and smoothies.

MAKE PREVENTION DELICIOUS
Fighting cancer can be delicious, fun and inexpensive. We recommend a good blender or mixer and a hefty stock of fresh tomatoes and carrots. Start looking for recipes that let you experiment with other fruits or vegetables. If you want to make your own soymilk, check out your local appliance stores for soymilk makers. In fighting cancer, prevention is still the key. “Prevention and early detection are still the most important and effective weapons in the battle against cancer,” says Nenette Umali, senior clinical dietitian at the St. Luke’s Medical Center. With these healthful thirst quenchers, can certainly be a refreshing undertaking.
