Green Tea May Positively Effect Stomach Cancer in Habitual Tea Drinkers

May 9th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Stomach Cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the Western World. In fact, the American Cancer Society estimates that
22,228 Americans will be diagnosed with stomach cancer during 2006. They also project that there will be an estimated 11,430 deaths from this type of disease.

Therefore, the search for a cure for this disease has been a long standing one. In the past, clinical researchers have hypothesized that drinking green tea may indeed inhibit stomach carcinogenesis, and a few case-studies with animals and human beings have successfully broadened this theory.

One landmark case study was conducted on humans in Shanghai, China from October 1991 to December 1993. This study is still considered to be the largest of its kind. During this study, 711 subjects and 711 controls (under the age of 80) were evaluated.

They were all residents of the Hongkou district and Nanhui country and were selected from identical streets or communes and matched in gender and age (within three years). This created two nearly identical, homogeneous groups. By creating these groups, researchers ensured that their findings would not be impacted by any outside contributing factors.

During this study, researchers evaluated the types of tea used, strength and temperature of the tea consumed, age when habitual tea drinking began, total duration of drinking for each batch, frequency of new batches of tea leaves used per day, and number of cups brewed from each batch. Statistical analysis was then completed with conditional logistic regression.

Researchers found that habitual Chinese green tea drinkers (regardless of when they started drinking the tea) had a lower risk of stomach cancer than their non tea drinking counterparts. They reasoned that the green tea may disrupt gastric carcinogenesis at both the intermediate and the late stages and that the major polyphenol in green tea extracts, also known as epigallocatechin gallate (ECGC), positively effects stomach cancer and also protects a number of organs in the digestive tract.

In 2004, a research team from Harvard Medical School worked on and expanded the premise of the Shanghai study. They reported that the epigallocatechin gallate (ECGC) in Green Tea impairs the growth and reproduction of cancer cells (SEG-1 and BIC-1) involved with Barrett’s Esophagus.

Barrett’s Esophagus is a condition in which the stomach throws back stomach acid due to impaired function and often leads to the destruction of the cells that line the esophagus which in turn, increases the risk of esophageal cancer.

Barrett’s Esophagus is a very serious condition often mistaken by sufferers as heartburn. This condition is frequently a precursor to esophageal cancer. Although one of the rarer forms of cancer, esophageal cancer is also one of the more deadly forms of cancer, with a five year survival rate of only 25 percent.

Harvard Medical School researchers found that exposure to ECGC (which is found in green tea) releases proteins which are known to help in repairing DNA damage. This finding has created even more interest in researching the effects of green tea and EGCC on cancer.

In other words, drinking Chinese Green Tea may be a healthy habit to acquire – one, that may prevent and lead to a positive effect on stomach cancer and those suffering from Barrett’s Esophagus.

Early Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer

May 9th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

The problem with trying to diagnose early is that the symptoms of early are similar to those caused by benign (non-cancerous) prostate enlargement known as Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy or BPH. In fact BPH often causes more symptoms than and is very common in men as they get older. Many men diagnosed with will also have BPH. However many men who have BPH will not have at all.

These early symptoms are mainly due to obstruction of the flow of urine out of the bladder. As the prostate enlarges it makes the tube running from the bladder which carries urine out of the body narrow. This can make it difficult to pee normally.

1. Hesitancy – difficulty with starting to pee

2. Weak Stream – the stream or flow of urine is not as fast and hard as it used to be

3. Straining – you need to push the urine out

4. Prolonged Urination – it takes you longer to pee even small amounts

5. Feeling of Incomplete Emptying – the bladder still feels like there is some urine left in it after you have just emptied it.

6. Urinary Retention – the inability to empty the bladder at all

Other Symptoms are due to irritation of the bladder by the enlarged prostate. Again these symptoms are the same for BPH as they are for .

1. Urgency – when you need to go, you need to go now, it’s difficult to hold on

2. Frequency – you need to pee more often

3. Nocturia – you need to get up in the night to pee

4. Urge Incontinence – where you suddenly need to pee and can’t hold on so you have an accident if you can’t get to a toilet in time

If you have any of these symptoms it is worth going to see your GP to talk about them. Firstly there are many treatments that can help with the symptoms plus the doctor can check that they are due to BPH and not to which could need urgent treatment. If you have these symptoms the doctor may want you to have a PSA blood test or a DRE.

IMPORTANT ADVANCED PROSTATE CANCER SYMPTOMS

When has spread outside of the prostate gland it can give symptoms from the areas it has spread to. Sometimes these are the first indication that something is wrong and the cancer is diagnosed late. They can also occur whilst a patient is being followed up (seen in clinic regularly) following treatment for and indicate that the cancer has progressed despite any treatment.

Where cancer invades locally around the prostate gland it can affect the nerves which supply the penis. This can lead to problems getting and sustaining an erection. It could also cause painful ejaculation or blood in the semen. There are many other causes of problems with erections (erectile dysfunction) and you should speak to you doctor about any concerns you have. There are many effective treatments available for this or it may be a sign of something more serious which needs investigating further.

Locally advanced can also cause pain in the pelvis or sometimes felt around the anus (back passage). This pain may be quite severe and is often persistent. Most often men would require strong pain killers from the doctor for this type of pain.

The most common site of secondary spread is the bones. This is usually felt as pain which is persistent and felt in the same place in the bones for a period of time. Sometimes this pain stops you from sleeping properly or affects the way in which you can move around and get on with daily life. There may be just one site or several bones affected at the same time.

The cancer in the bones will also cause them to be more brittle and easier to break or fracture with even minor injuries. If one of the bones in the spine collapses from being affected by cancer it can cause pressure on the spinal cord. This is the bit of the body which sends messages from the brain to the arms and legs to tell them to move and carries messages back about sensation and temperature. If the spinal cord is squashed it can cause numbness in the arms or legs and difficulty moving them. It may also affect the way you open your bowels or urinate, and is often associated with pain in the back. Cancer secondaries in the bones may also cause a high calcium level in the blood which can make you feel nauseous, sleepy, confused, constipated and have abdominal pains.

Remember there are many reasons why (especially elderly) men can get aches and pains in their bones (arthritis etc) but if you are worried you should tell you doctor. They may be able to reassure you or may want to arrange for you to have a bone scan (see earlier). This obviously helps to assess what form of treatment would be most appropriate.

When cancer is more advanced it may start to cause weight loss and a general deterioration in health. If it has spread beyond the bones to other areas of the body it could cause symptoms there e.g. cause breathlessness if spread to the lungs, cause headaches if spread to the brain.

Preventing Cancer

May 9th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Governments throughout the world rarely tell their populations what the individual
can do to prevent a disease occurring in the first instance. While all the emphasis
is put on building more hospitals, better equipped hospitals and reducing waiting
lists, lowering the need for hospital space by preventing diseases largely gets
ignored.

Cancer is a good example of a disease where it’s strike rate can be greatly reduced
by the individual taking precautionary measures. The incidence of cancer can, in
some cases, be reduced by more than 50% by taking simple preventative actions.

The first preventative measure that should be taken is adequate exposure to direct
sunlight. The effect of direct sunlight on the skin produces vitamin D, which is vital
to good health. While some vitamin D can be obtained from food sources, the
individual is unlikely to get enough from sources other than the sun. The exposure
for white people need only be 10-15 minutes a day 3 or 4 times a week. However, the
further you live from the equator, the more exposure you need. It should be noted
that people with dark skin pigmentation require 20 times the exposure stated above
to create the same amount of vitamin D. Sufficient levels of vitamin D are crucial
to calcium absorbption in the intestines.

The individual can further reduce his/her susceptibility to this disease by
the choice of foods eaten at meal times. Limit your intake of meat, butter, eggs
and cheese. These foods contain animal fats which increase your risk of developing certain types of
cancer (breast, prostate, intestine and pancreas). Eat more fish and poultry
instead.

Eating a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables ( tomatoes, carrots, leeks, cabbage,
broccoli and onions etc ) helps protect the body against cancer of the colon,
stomach, rectum and lungs. These are also rich in vitamins A, B and C, all of
which help to fight free radicals and thereby .

Eat wholegrain bread for its fiber content.Fiber improves intestinal functions
and helps protect against .

Get as much vitamin C as possible by eating fruits like kiwi, apple. black currant,
raw turnip, sorrel, raw green pepper, raw green cabbage and citrus fruits. Also
season salads with parsley which is very rich in vitamin C.

Avoid smoked, salted and barbecued foods which contain substances that are
potentially carcinogenic, especially as far as stomach cancer is concerned.

Because of the variables with the nutrient value of food dependent upon where it came from, how fresh it is, how it is stored and how it is cooked, it may be prudent to take a daily food supplement to ensure that you are getting enough vitamins and minerals. The important vitamins are A, the B-complex group, C, D and E. Because vitamins are largely ineffective without minerals, it is best to take a combined multivitamin and mineral tablet or capsule to make sure there are no deficiencies. These are readily available at health food stores, and can be bought via the Internet for delivery in the mail.

Don’t let yourself get too fat: persons who are 40% or more above their normal
weight stand a much higher risk of getting cancer.

The above simple measures should cut in half the likelihood of you contacting
cancer in your lifetime!

Summary of Cervical Cancer

May 9th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

The cervix is the organ that connects the uterus and vagina in a woman’s body. Cervical cancer is a cancer that forms in the tissues of the cervix. Cervical cancer may not have symptoms that can be detected easily and is a slow growing form of cancer. It can be detected with regular Pap tests. A Pap test is a procedure in which scraped cells from the cervix are examined under a microscope.

It is estimated that there are now 11,150 cases of each year in the United States. It is also estimated that approximately 3,670 women die in the United States each year from .

Risk factors may be any number of things that will affect the chances of a person developing a disease greater. Protective factors are elements that affect the chances of a person developing a disease less. A person may be able to avoid some risk factors while others cannot be avoided. You can choose to stop smoking. Smoking is a known risk factor for many forms of caner. However, you cannot control inheriting specific genes from your parents that could be deemed a risk factor for a form of cancer. Genetics is an uncontrollable risk factor. Avoiding known risk factors and increasing known protective factors for cancer development is .

Avoiding risk factors does not offer assurance that a person will not develop cancer. Research has found some people may be more sensitive to cancer causing factors while others are not at all sensitive to the same risk factors.

By studying patterns of cancer in the population it can be learned what factors may contribute to cancer development and what may aid in the prevention of cancer. Meanwhile it cannot be explained why some people develop cancer while others do not.

It is best to discuss with your health care provider about methods. They will be best qualified to advise you about methods that would be suited for you.
