Asbestos And Mesothelioma Connection

April 20th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Asbestos are primarily known as the substance which causes the deadly disease Mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer in which the internal organs of patients become surrounded by a cancerous coating of cells. Asbestos describes any of a group of fibrous metamorphic minerals of the hydrous magnesium silicate chemical family.

These fibers are often used in cement during construction and though they have been banned in construction in the United States today, their presence at construction sites world wide five and six decades ago are causing medical and legal problems today. Asbestos can take five or six decades to fully display their deadly potential and thus many of the construction workers who absorbed the dangerous chemical in the 1950;s and 1960;s while working, are just now experiencing the effects of the disease. Hence, many of the lawsuits that are being filed for Mesothelioma have to do with the intake of asbestos at construction plants in the 1950’s and the 1960’s.

Currently, these asbestos cause a disease for which there is no cure; however, due to the amount of attention that this disease is getting, many top scientists and researchers worldwide are working to develop a cure for the disease. Like many cancers, without continued support and attention, research and funding are not possible.

Cancer - A Way to Win: Lead a Stress-free Life

April 20th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

In the book, Imperial Secrets of Health and Longevity, Bob Flaws wrote: “Westerners did not know how to live healthy lives … as long as patients did not eat right and live moderately, they either continued to be sick or got sick again soon.”

According to the Chinese medical classic “Nei Jing,” (written more than 2,000 years ago), in order to attain good health, one needs to follow Nature’s laws and have a well-balanced lifestyle consisting of diet, work, exercise, rest and sleep.

The Nei Jing continued by saying that nowadays people use beverages other than pure water. They adopt reckless and unusual behaviour patterns and indulge in over-eating, over-drinking and too much sex. Even too much emotions, joys, anger, brooding, sadness, fear or fright can cause diseases. These had adverse effects on the vital organs, the heart, spleen, liver and kidneys. Such effects are reflected in various symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, dizziness, belching, bloating and a decreased appetite.

Sadly enough, Western medicine does not consider one’s manner of living as important as in the treatment of diseases. Indeed, I was baffled and saddened to know that a particular doctor told his seriously ill to go ahead and do what he likes — play strenuous badminton games and do weight-lifting. It seems like a happy-go-lucky advice — go out and do what you like, you are going to die anyway! We feel that this is not sound advice coming from a professional who should know better. Does the learned doctor not know that stress is one of the causes of cancer? Stress can be both physical or mental. Over-working of the mind, worrying and being anxious are equally bad. Learn to take life easy.

Doing normal work and physical exercise are necessary to increase the circulation of qi and blood and to build the body’s ability to resist diseases. But, this must be done in moderation. Sun Si-Miao, a great Chinese physician and sage once wrote: “It is desirable for one to frequently engage in minor jobs, without over-fatiguing oneself by work so intense as to exceed one’s capabilities.”

In short, let us sum up the wisdom of the Chinese health theory: to conserve one’s life, do everything in moderation and lead a stress-free life. Excessive anger, sorrow, fright, fear, worry can all lead to illness. On the other hand, even too much of joy is detrimental to health.

Your sick body needs help to rebuild itself. The immune system within you needs to fight these cancerous cells. Therefore, it is most sensible for you to do your part to conserve your qi and not abuse and waste it unnecessarily.

Try to lead a stress-free life by sleeping well and have peace of mind. Unfortunately, this advice to cancer patients is easily given. If the doctor says there is no hope and you should be prepared to die –what do you expect the sick to do? Go home and sleep peacefully? The mind goes haywire, the patient cannot sleep day and night, making his situation even worse. Unfortunately, doctors do unwittingly cause this to happen. And worse still, they do not seem to realise their blunder.

In order for you to attain peace of mind, it is recommended that you find something meaningful to do. This is to dissipate your worries and stress. Doing classical Chinese exercises like tai qi, qigong and meditation exercises like yoga are helpful. Qigong raises the energy level. The same can be said of yoga.

But whatever you do, we advocate moderation. Remember the saying: “you can even die by laughing too much!”

Sleep is the greatest rest for the body. Try to sleep well and keep a calm mind. Eat lightly before going to bed. Over-excitement and over-thinking affect the mind and cause it to wander in circles. A disturbed state of mind consumes qi and is bad for health. We find belief in God is most comforting. Turn to God. Pray for His kindness, mercy and strength for you to go through this ordeal. Be reminded that God loves you. He cares for you. In Him you can have peace, if only you care to ask.

Treatment Options for Colorectal Cancer

April 20th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

The treatment depends on the staging of the cancer. When is
caught at early stages (with little spread) it can be curable. However when it is
detected at later stages (when distant [[metastasis|metastases]] are present) it is
less likely to be curable.

Surgery remains the primary treatment while and/or radiotherapy
may be recommended depending on the individual patient’s staging and other
medical factors.

Surgery

Surgical treatment is by far the most likely to result in a cure of if the
tumor is localized. Very early cancer that develops within a polyp can often be cured
by removing the polyp at the time of colonoscopy. More advanced cancers typically
require surgical removal of the section of colon containing the tumor leaving
sufficient margins to reduce likelihood of re-growth. If possible, the remaining parts
of colon are anastomosed together to create a functioning colon. In cases when
anastomosis is not possible, a stoma (artificial orifice) is created. While surgery is
not usually offered if significant metastasis is present, surgical removal of isolated
liver metastases is common. Improved has increased the number of
patients who are offered surgical removal of isolated liver metastases.

Laparoscopic assist resection of the colon for tumour can reduce the size of painful
incision and minimize the risk of infection.
As with any surgical procedure, colorectal surgery can in rare cases result in
complications. These may include infection, abscess, fistula or bowel obstruction.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is used to reduce the likelihood of metastasis developing, shrink
tumour size, or slow tumor growth. Chemotherapy is often applied after surgery
(adjuvant), before surgery (neo-adjuvant), or as the primary therapy if surgery is not
indicated (palliative). The treatments listed here have been shown in clinical trials to
improve survival and/or reduce mortality and have been approved for use by the US
Food and Drug Administration.
Adjuvant (after surgery) . One regimen involves the combination of
infusional 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX)
5-fluorouracil (5-FU)
Leucovorin (LV)
Oxaliplatin (Eloxatin®)
Capecitabine (Xeloda®)

Chemotherapy for metastatic disease. Commonly used first line regimens involve
the combination of infusional 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX)
with bevacizumab or infusional 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin, and irinotecan (FOLFIRI)
with bevacizumab
5-fluorouracil (5-FU)
Leucovorin
Irinotecan
Oxaliplatin
Bevacizumab
Cetuximab

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is used to kill tumor tissue before or after surgery or when
surgery is not indicated. Sometimes agents are used to increase the
effectiveness of radiation by sensitizing tumor cells if present. Radiotherapy is not
used routinely in , as it could lead to radiation enteritis, and is
difficult to target specific portions of the colon, but may be used on metastatic
tumor deposits if they compress vital structures and/or cause pain. There may be a
role for post-operative adjuvant radiation in the case where a tumor perforates the
colon as judged by the surgeon or the pathologist. However, as the area of the prior
tumor site can be difficult (if not impossible) to ascertain by imaging, surgical clips
need to be left in the colon to direct the radiotherapist to the area of risk.

Immunotherapy

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is gaining prominence as a complementary
theraputic agent in the treatment of . A review of results from
recent clinical trials is given in Mosolits et al.

Support Therapies

Cancer diagnosis very often results in an enormous change in the patient’s
psychological wellbeing. Various support resources are available from, hospitals and
other agencies which provide counseling, social service support, cancer support
groups, and other services. These services help to mitigate some of the difficulties
of integrating a patient’s medical complications into other parts of their life.

What Is Lymphoma?

April 20th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Most folks diagnosed with any type of cancer notice it hugely difficult to agree with their predicament. The typical reaction of patients and their family is disbelief of their disease. However, cancer is something that won’t go away quietly because you avoid its existence. It is therefore better to determine as much as possible of the illness and learn how to attack it than to simply hide and wait for the unavoidable to happen. In the case of people with , it is critical that you should understand what is going on in your body and be ready for any circumstance. Many things can happen to people with , as this type of cell anomaly is rather mobile compared to other forms of cancers.

Lymphoma is a type of cancer that assaults the lymphocytes. The lymphocytes are defined by medical science as any of the nearly colorless cells found in the blood, lymph, and lymphoid tissues, constituting approximately 25 percent of white blood cells and including B cells, which function in humoral immunity, and T cells, which act in cellular specific immunity. So you should know that lymphocytes are not only most mobile as it is carried in the blood, it is also part of the body’s typical protective armor called the immune system.

Like all forms of cancers, the cells divided abnormally or too quickly in folks with . Abnormal lymphocytes most often collect in the lymph nodes making the lymph nodes enlarge. However, swollen lymph nodes does not necessarily mean you have as there are other forms of diseases that lead to the swelling of lymph nodes. There are many forms of lymphomas; however, the most popular classification is Hodgkin’s , which is named after Thomas Hodgkin who discovered this line of cancer in 1832, and non-Hodgkin’s , which includes all other forms of .

Lymphocytes are part of the ordinary circulation of the human body. Since assaults the lymphocytes, aside form the lymph nodes; the abnormal lymphocytes have access to individual parts of the human body. Although in most cases, the spleen and the bone marrow are the favorite spots where abnormal lymphocytes would gather and form exclusive of of the lymph nodes, there are some everyone who can develop in the liver, the stomach, and in very rare cases, in the brain. Lymphoma can form almost everywhere in the body and it is not uncommon for to occur all at once in different parts of the human body. This is why is considered one of the systemic diseases that affects the entire human physiology.

Indications of are frequently affiliated with the swollen glands. As the unnatural lymphocytes no longer performs it typical functions of protecting the body from infections, the person with become more prone to infections of any breed. It should be noted that part of the functions of the lymphocytes in the human body involves assisting the body’s immune system in fighting off infection and other forms of diseases. Where a person has , his or her immune system is now impaired and he or she can no longer fight infections efficiently.
