Ovarian Cancer

April 14th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Ovarian cancer begins in the cells that form the ovaries. Among these cells are surface epithelial cells, germ cells, and the sex cord-stromal cells. This is why cancer cells that metastasize from other organ sites to the ovary are not called . Breast and colon cancers are examples of such cancers.

It has been observed that the majority of women with epithelial are not diagnosed early enough. The diagnosis is done only when the disease has reached an advanced stage. By that time, the cancer spreads to the upper abdomen (stage I) or beyond (stage II). The chance of these women surviving five years is only 15 to 20 percent. But the chance of survival for the same period is 90% for patients in stage I, and about 70% for stage II patients.

Some ovarian tumors are benign, in which case the patient can be cured by surgically removing one ovary or the part of the ovary hosting the tumor. Some are malignant or cancerous. Malignant ovarian tumors are generally of three types: epithelial tumors, germ cell tumors and stromal tumors.

Epithelial tumors, accounting for most of the cases, develop in a layer of cube-shaped cells known as the germinal epithelium, which surrounds the outside of the ovaries. Its victims are mostly teenagers and young women. Germ cell tumors are not so common, and are found in the egg-maturation cells of the ovary. These patients can not only be cured, but also their fertility protected. Dangerous if allowed to spread, stromal tumors originate from connective tissue cells that hold the ovary together and produce the female hormones estrogen and progesterone.

All ovarian tumors are not cancerous. Benign cysts, dermoid tumors, and borderline malignant tumors all are distinct from . These are curable and rarely prove fatal.

Alternative Cancer Treatment - Fighting Cancer with Plant and Fruit Based Treatments

April 14th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

A lot of studies performed by medical researchers in the cancer field identified a group of naturally occurring substances in the body known as nitrilosides - these are found in many fruits. These are key cancer preventers. This article covers some of the commonly used ones.

Alternative Cancer Treatment: Cherries

Cherries contain the monoterpene perillyl alcohol, which can induce tumor cell death. In 1999, Michigan State University scientists found that cherries dark coloring material is an excellant source of antioxidants known as anthocyanins.

As a matter of fact, the antioxidant activity of tart black cherries is greater than that of vitamin E, the benchmark antioxidant. Dark colored cherries are very rich with a total of around 38 mg of anthocyanins in about 100gms fruit.

Cherries also have pain-relieving ingredients in them. Most of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen and Vioxx work by inhibiting cox1 and cox2.

Cherries also contain a dose of cox inhibitors comparable to these over-the-counter pain relievers. Cox inhibitors are also being investigated closely for anti-cancer activity.

Cherries also contain very high levels of Melatonin. Melatonin is the body’s natural way of regulating sleep and has some anti-cancer properties.

Considering all these facts, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) gave a grant to Johns Hopkins university in Baltimore to study the use of sour cherries in alleviating the pain of cancer.

Michigan is responsible for the production of over 80% of America’s tart cherries. 2 teaspoons a day of concentrated cherry juice is a good dose. There are no side effects as with Aspirin or other NSAIDs.

Alternative Cancer Treatment: Cranberries

Cranberries have very good anti-cancer properties. This was proved by the researchers at the university of Western Ontario. They found that regular consumption of cranberry products inhibited the growth of tumors in animals.

Cranberries are a rich source of flavonoids. Flavonoids are a variety of compounds found in plants and this compound was investigated for it’s anti-cancer activity.

Alternative Cancer Treatment: Papaya

Papaya is found widely in tropical American countries. Papaya leaf juice is claimed to have reversed cancer in many people living on the Gold Coast in Australia.

Harold W. Tieze in his popular book “Papaya - The Medicine Tree” describes how to make juice and relays the stories of many cancer survivors who used the juice to get rid of their cancer completely.

Papaya leaves can be dried and ground and used instead of the juice. The astonishing curable property of these leaves have been demonstrated in mice. Tumors found in humans were injected in mice and these mice were treated with Papaya and the tumors dissapeared completely.
