The Breast Cancer Roller Coaster Ride

March 20th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Having is not an automatic death sentence, but it does put a person on an emotional roller coaster. I speak from personal experience.

In 2001, I went for my standard mammogram. A suspicious area reveal the same mass as last year’s test, so another ultrasound was ordered. This time the doctor advised me to schedule a biopsy even though I felt well and had no pain. I was positive the doctor was wrong, but I made the appointment anyway.

At work, I scheduled time off, including an extra day so I could go to the last Diamondback baseball home game to see if they would advance to the playoffs. I was positive the test would reveal I was all right, without cancer.

Back at work, I got the test results of an infiltrating carcinoma stage 2/3 via a phone call. I turned so white, my co-workers wanted to know if I was all right. I mumbled I was okay and gave my primary care doctor the name of the surgeon I preferred for treatment. This surgeon had removed a lump in 1998 and tests showed it was benign and I had full confidence in his skills. Later, I realized this was the beginning of denial, a common experience.

My surgeon went over the potential treatment, but I knew I really had only one option if I truly wanted to get well, a modified . Fear now set in.

At first, I refused to talk about my disease or try to put a support group in place. I was going to “tough it out.” Finally I realized I needed an outlet and began gathering my personal cheerleaders from family, friends, church members, and e-mail contacts I had never met. This was the beginning of reality for my life as it was and dealing with my emotions instead of stuffing them inside. On the third day after I received my cancer news, the beginning of my began. My mantra became, “this is only a bump in the road.”

I even reached out. I went to a nurse friend and had her talk to me about my upcoming surgery. A was similar to peeling an onion. Visualizing a peeling onion made me laugh. It was a good way to combat nerves. I felt ready. Surgery was scheduled for October 30, 2001.

Back home after surgery, I healed. My husband even allowed me complete control of the TV remote. Wow! I also started following my dream of becoming a writer. I kept notes of my feelings, which eventually led to a 22-page booklet titled, Breast Cancer Survivor Year One published by Elan Press. I sold it for cost ($5) to my friends or to people who needed help with cancer, either for themselves, or for their friends or family.

My five years of follow-up treatment (taking tamoxifen only, no chemo or radiation) have passed and my life goes on with writing dominating my life. Cancer became the turning point for me to follow my lifetime dream.

Points to understand to help you recover:

1. Support group are the first line of defense. They can be found online and locally.

2. Make sure you have developed relaxation techniques for yourself. Choose something easy to do that really takes tension away for you. Some suggestions are watching funny movies at home, listening to music, or reading a book.

3. Understand what drain tubes are, why you need them, and most of all, make sure someone shows you how to keep them in place by fastening the tubes to a shirt or a nightgown. Your doctor can explain all about drain tubes and some hospital nurses can usually show you how to fasten those tubes to a shirt.

4. Take lots of time to decide to wear prosthesis (fake boob) or to have reconstruction if you have a .

5. Have someone show you what prosthesis looks like (check with a cancer support group or someone who has gone through this process; hospitals often can help you make this connection). Hold it to see how it feels and ask about the type of special bra you will need to wear if you choose to wear a prosthesis.

6. Ask about buying special bras for prosthesis (usually checking with your insurance gains this information, although cancer support groups and hospital cancer help can give you information to get you started) and know what a fitter does to ensure you are fitted correctly for these items.

7. See if you can find someone who sews to see if they can convert the bra portion of a regular swimsuit with pockets to hold a prosthesis. That’s cheaper than buying a commercial suit at $100! I now take the soft, stretchy cloth covering for my prosthesis and pin it to the swimsuit bra portion to hold my prosthesis in place.

8. Make sure you understand your doctor’s instructions for caring for your arm if lymph nodes are removed to check for cancer cells. Sometimes you may be limited for lifting a number of pounds, and after a time, you will need to do exercise to ensure you have mobility for future arm use.

Most of all, remember, with having a , you will go through a grieving process for what was lost. Allow yourself to grieve. You might look and feel different for a short time. The happy side of this loss is you’ll be getting rid of something that can kill if left untreated.

Abatement of Toxic Fumes When Working With Composites

March 20th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Any general aviation experimental aircraft builder will tell you that when working with composites and epoxies that if you do not have a complete breathing mask and excellent ventilation that the fumes will get you higher than a kite. And those fumes are doing much more than just getting you high, as they are toxic.

The abatement of Toxic Fumes when working with Composites is indeed essential, especially in the smaller factories, which sell to larger companies and corporations and make parts. While growing up I had a friend who made Winglets for airliners, which decreased the wing tip vortices and improved efficiency of the wing, thus the aircraft used less fuel and performed better at slower speeds.

These winglets were made of composite. The gentleman’s partner ran the shop and he did sales. Within a few years his partner had a stroke and then died and it was considered later that the fumes got to him even though they did have ventilation in the shop and understood the issues when working with epoxies and composites. These things can be very bad for your lungs and such fumes and materials when not carefully controlled have caused Lung Cancers too.

As the rush for lighter vehicles, parts and such increase so to will the use of sandwich composite construction and these issues will become more prevalent as private enterprise and small businesses pick up the slack, nevertheless no matter what size the company is or where on the Earth those parts are made or which people are exploited for labor; they need to think about the Abatement of Toxic Fumes when working with Composites. Consider this in 2006.

Can Ellagic Acid help fight Cancer?

March 20th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

What is Ellagic Acid?

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death known the world over. It affects various parts of the human body and for years now, scientists and medical practitioners have been looking for a ‘miracle’ cure to this traitorous disease.

A person affected with cancer has cancer cells or tumors caused by carcinogens. In the continuous research conducted amidst the fight against cancer, studies have shown that ellagic acid may spoil, stunt or stop the growth and spreading of certain cancer-causing carcinogens.

Ellagic acid has shown such promise that scientists are not discounting the fact that this may be the cure that they are waiting for to treat and .

‘Ellagic Acid Basics’

Ellagic acid is basically known as a ‘polyphenol’ compound. Polyphenol is the substance found mostly in plants and this substance gives some plants their color. A tree leaf, for example, turns brown during fall and green during spring. Polyphenol is the substance responsible for the seasonal color change of a tree’s leaves.

Being a polyphenol compound, ellagic acid is considered as an antioxidant with antibacterial properties – which can be applied to strengthen and improve the body’s immune system.

‘Sources of Ellagic Acid’

Forty years ago, ellagic acid became popular in the medical community because of its positive effects on blood clotting.

Due to its promising potential to be the main ingredient in the fight against cancer, ellagic acid is currently being nurtured and further studied.

Here are some fruits and vegetables containing ellagic acid:

-strawberries
-cranberries
-blackberries
-raspberries
-pecans
-walnuts
-pomegranates
-other plant food

These plants use ellagic acid to rid themselves of pests and prevent them from having infections.

Such plant foods, fruits and vegetables produce ellagic acid and glucose which are easily absorbed by the human body. In addition, berries and promegnates are found to have the most amount of ellagic acid.

Currently, the extracts from these food sources containing ellagic acid are used in dietary supplements. They come in liquid, capsule or powder form and since they are used mostly as dietary supplements, as of now they are not yet proven effective in the curing or preventing of a specific disease.

‘Advantages and Disadvantages of Ellagic Acid’

1. Studies have shown that ellagic acid stunts the growth of cancer cells. Although further research needs to be done in order to prove that it can actually treat and , the anti-cancer properties that this substance has shows much potential.

2. Ellagic acid mainly acts as an antioxidant and has been known to cause death in tumor or cancer cells. Specifically, it aids in the removal of certain cancer-causing substances included in the patient’s blood.

3. It also shows in studies conducted on laboratory animals that ellagic acid may reduce defects on birth, liver problems, heart conditions, promotes and strengthens the immune system and aids in fast wound .

Recent studies conducted by researchers in Italy found men and women who undergo to treat cancer can use ellagic acid to reduce the side effects of the treatment.

Chemotherapy is not known to be ‘kind’ to the patient who undergoes such therapy. With the aid of ellagic acid, these side effects are reduced and research is still being done as to whether it can also slow the spreading of cancer cells on a patient’s body.

4. Other medical professionals found that ellagic acid can fight the substance that cause the spreading of tumor or cancer cells.

On the other hand, since most of these positive effects provided by ellagic acid are based on tests conducted in medical laboratories, it has not been entirely tested on humans yet.

Although ellagic acid is mainly found in fruits such as berries, a normal diet cannot include these fruits alone. A still needs a balanced and healthy diet – which can and should include ellagic acid-containing foods and supplements.

Currently, ellagic acid is available mostly in the form of dietary supplements. Cancer patients who are taking other medications should consult a professional before deciding to take this dietary supplement despite of its potential cancer-curing effects.

However, it does show such promising results in the fight against cancer that medical professionals are not discounting the possibility of ellagic acid turning into the miracle drug for cancer.

How Preparing For Annual Check-Ups After Prostate Cancer Cause Almost Two Months of Stress Each Year

March 20th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Just about two months before it’s time for the next annual check-up, my husband starts to stress about this upcoming event. His stress and my hormones can be a rough combination. He told me that he’s a worrier. Even if he wins the lottery, he has promised me he’ll continue to worry.

Issues have come up about our health and even my annual female-type examinations give him anxiety. How do you manage. First, be aware that this pattern will continue . We discuss the matters. He states that once you have had any type of Cancer, dealt with the consequences, examinations, and procedures, and been given a clean bill of health, you don’t want it back.

Other Cancer survivor friends have told me that once you’ve been through chemo and radiation, you are not sure if you could tolerate it and everything that goes with the procedures and recovery a repeated time. It’s so tough. Once is more than enough.

My mammogram report gave the doctors something to question. When I told my husband he went into panic and anxiety attack mode. I told him that they did not suspect Cancer, it was something else they just wanted to get better pictures and be sure about. He freaked out. He was unable to do his job for a few days.

We are working towards more balance in our lives every day in all areas including our thoughts, our food intake, work, recreation, and exercise. Successful living and thinking happens one minute at a time, one day at a time. It helps not to overwhelm yourself with too many issues. Small steps lead to big results.
